So, the DC schools systems were not up to snuff. Everybody in the area knows that. They have been in disrepair for quite some time. It seems that every Mayor has come into office saying that something will be done and every Mayor has left office with the schools in pretty much the same condition as they were when they arrived.
Mayor Fenty did not wait. He announced sweeping changes and brought someone into his administration that will get it done. It is a New Day in Washington, D.C.
There have been questions about the way that the District of Columbia operates in the past. There were scandals involving parking tickets and other areas of the beauracracy. Recently, it was revealed that several employees in the tax collection division had violated public trust and existing laws to steal from the residents of the city. In the past, wrists would be slapped and an internal investigation would be started.
Mayor Fenty didn't flinch. He stood tall and quietly demanded that the people involved were fired and charged with the crime. He took out the broom and removed the garbage that a few short years ago thought they were sitting pretty. It is a New Day in Washington, D.C.
This past weekend, we watched in horror as the bodies of several children were discovered in a row house. In years past, flowers would have been set outside and politicians would have wrung their collective hands over the tragedy. Announcements about short staffing and case overload would have been issued.
Mayor Fenty wasted no time. He fired the people responsible. No longer can case workers or department managers shrug their shoulders and complain that they are over worked. It is a New Day in Washington, D.C.
The sun is rising high on our Capital City. Our Mayor is taking the administration of the City as a challenge. He will not tolerate indifference, graft or "that's the way it has always been". He is well on his way to transforming the laughing stock of national pundits into the true Capital City we know and love.

He sounds like a very amazing man and I'm thankful there are still people like him arising to positions of power and not afraid to make drastic changes when they clearly should be made. Courage is such a fine virtue and so scarcely seen anymore..

I was born in DC! The city needs change. It is such an awesome place to be a native of (yes I know I live in VA but the DC birthright is mine) and I hope that after the tragic incidents this past week that Mayor Fenty can make change happen. We have a terrible legacy when it comes to the DC government. I'm glad every day when I wake up and will be even happier to see positive change come for the citizens of the district. Where is Craig T Nelson when you need him?

I can't wait to see how long that lasts.....I guess it depends on who he ends up ticking off....that's usually what happens to the good guys....they tick off someone and poof they're gone. For our Capitals sake I hope he lasts awhile :)
This is indeed good news for the citizens of our fair Capitol city and long, long, overdue. May he sweep out the chaff and good riddance.
It is about time. He is fighting for change not self-distracted. He doesnt seem to be worried about stepping on toes to make a change. Good for him!
I for one LOVE Washington DC - and if I could live anywhere else - well - that would be the town. I'm thankful and hopeful for the new day and new opportunity. Perhaps he will set a good example for the next set of elected officials who move in there!
John, Indeed the history of the District is intense and filled with scandal and intrigue, its almost as if that norm is now the expected level of operation, will things ever change? Maybe they might appear to for a while, but is anything really ever as it seems in DC? Must be the lead pipes? Lance
I feel hopeful and positive that Mayor Fenty will see us through. He has started off positively and I hope to see much improvement in the way things are handled especially in the area of service.
I'd love to see some of those guys fired! Lets start with the DMV. Just the ones who act like its killing them to answer a question or tell you how to efficiently handle a matter. Clean House! New Day!
