Washington DC - A city full of excitement - Or not...

As I was sitting in a Starbucks on Capitol Hill just now; I look out the window to see a normal DC sight: A Police Car, a big black SUV; followed by a black town car, and another police car.

Well as any DC resident knows; that small of a security detachment can't be the President or the VP. They have to close streets for them! Plus of course there is the Helicopter that circles overhead looking for goodness-knows-what on the roof tops.

Nope; in fact; this small Motorcade, was just Nancy Pelosi. (At least it looked like Nancy). If you don't know who she is; she is the Speaker of the House and 2nd in line for the Oval Office.

When I first moved to Washington DC; it was all exciting to see a real-life Motorcade; Presidential or otherwise. But quickly; life sets in and you realize that everyone finds importance, if not security in having a motorcade race through the crowded city streets. The President, the VP, Foreign Presidents and Heads of State, the Queen, Speaker of the House, Condi Rice, hell even Cher had a Black SUV follow her when she testified on the Hill last year.

Rarely is being jammed in a Motorcade-related traffic jam exciting in the lease bit. Now I did see the top of the Queen of England head; as she raced down Connecticut avenue in her big black limo. Of course; about 20 of us were almost run down by Dick Cheneys Squadron of Black SUVs last summer; as they screamed around Dupont Circle - Thank goodness he was bird hunting!

Right before Christmas; as my ears pounded from all the sirens that zipped past me as I was leaving a Listing Appointment; a tourist asked me (with the most excitement I have seen on a person); "Was that him?"

"Was that who?" I replied; then I realised the question... You mean GW? - Oh yeah, you can tell - if it makes you more than 5 minutes late crossing the street - it's him.

Yes; Washington DC - Can be exciting. Seeing your 1st Heard of Black SUVs, Limos and Men with REALLY big guns race past you; is rather heart pounding - Just bring earplugs and some Aspirin for the post-motorcade headache.

(Sadly; I have no pictures of a Motorcade - I am always afraid I might get shot at if I reach quickly into my bag; while they pass by!)

James, the only other place with as much excitement may be Hollywood with the paparazzi.  Though, there it's unlikely you'll get shot by Secret Service reaching for your camera for a few shots of Lindsay Lohan.

Years ago we were in Manhattan trying to walk from one area to another only to find major street closings and police absolutely everywhere hindering our way. . .as we mingled with the crowd to see what was going on, along came a motorcade and who should we see riding by?  President George Bush (the first). . .for a girl from Colorado, that sure was exciting!

All that care in one city!

You should do a story on your doggy, and perhaps helping the local Humane society getting people to look at getting pets. You know that old Harry Truman comment. If you want a friend in Washington get yourself a dog.

Your dog is really cute, and everyone loves an animal story.

Your friend from WI. 72 degrees, yesterday, and 62 today. Rub it in.

Tom

I guess you missed the piece on the news last night showing a full presidential motorcade for the vice president's dog's trip to the vet.  ;-p

Nice blog about your exciting city.  Move to Arkansas and just have tornados for excitement.  I like those new (I think) buttons at the bottome of your blog.

James We only see those big motorcades when they come here to do a speech in a school or at a Rotary Club - I'm a Rotarian, but I wasn't invited,  Karen

Brian-  Oh yeah... it's a blast....

Teri- It IS exciting... the 1st one or two times.....then it's just traffic!

Tom - I actually have a post planned with my pooch featured.  It may not post for another week or so...... watch for it

Gregory... Yeah I heard it was just for a check-up?  At least the pooch wasn't dodging shotgun pellets...

Barbara - That kind of excitement I can do without!  Thanks for the button compliment... They continue to be a work in progress!

Karen- You are always invited to DC - we can hang out on Pennsylvania Ave and wait for the next one...

I was sitting at the California Pizza Kitchen on Conn Ave a few years ago when a bunch of secret service agents came in.  Then after a few minutes of checking out the crowd in walked Madeline Albright and what appeared to be just a bunch of friends for a "girls" lunch.  I guess we all get a bit jaded by the politicians we see and no one even paid her any attention.  Go figure.
