The Rose Park Farmer’s Market

Now that I’ve learned that some of Whole Food’s organic veggies actually come from China, buying my produce at local farmer’s markets seems like a pretty good idea. So I started off checking out Georgetown’s Rose Park Market, which is open every Wednesday between 4 and 7.

The idea was to pick up some, oh I dunno, healthy stuff. Zuchinni, cucumbers, cherries, raspberries, peaches, maybe some herbs to plant in my “garden” once I pull out all the weeds.

But wait! What is this? Who is this!

I am drawn to this table where I meet KarenKay Roberts. And Oh! My! God! These were cakes. Not ordinary cakes. They were totally amazing.

Karen was disappointed in this day’s Country Coconut Pecan Pound Cake – it looked like a giant sticky bun with coconut added. But the Strawberry Blackberry Lemon Cream Cheese Pound Cake had enough fruit to be a fruit serving on Weight Watchers.

Well, that’s a stretch.

I left without the zucchini. But I did leave with a piece of KarenKay’s cake. And this is in spite of the fact that I am leaving in two weeks for Cape Cod, where I will be expected to show up on the beach in an, er, bathing suit.

So, if you have any plans to break a diet, KarenKay’s cake is worth every single calorie and every minute I will spend on the treadmill to burn it off.

The market is in the section of Rose Park that is at 26th and O Streets.

And here are some more photos on the Rose Park Market

Yum!

Great pix Pat. You should get your photo back to KarenKay with her cakes for sale. It and she are adorable. I love Farmer's Markets.

Gary, I just sent her a link to this post.  I think she'll get a kick out of it.

Local produce or farmer's markets to have local produce that is usually better because it is fresh.  Greenville, SC has one downtown on Saturday mornings, there is another official one on Rutherford Road and many little mom & pop produce stand.  Yummy.

Patricia, I am grateful that I have the land to have my own garden. At least I know what the plants have on them.

Sheila, farmers' markets are cropping up all over town.  This one is one of my favorites.

And Danny, I could have a little garden if I had time to take care of it!  My little piece of land is going to seed with weeds!

Absolutely'scruptious' post!........Farmers markets here I come..............absolutely love them!

Patricia:  What a come-down !  Whole Foods "fresh" veggies come from China.  Yeah... fresh two weeks ago.  Yikes.  I think going to local farmer's markets is a great idea.  And... when I first looked at the bottom picture in your post... I thought they were tomatoes.  But no... they are fresh cherries.  I have had this "thing" about fresh cherries since I was a child.  I am tempted to drive ll the way up to DC for a quart or two of those cherries.  Totally Yum !  Thanks so much for sharing.

Liz, and I love that their food hasn't been irradiated or unduly messed with1

And Karen Anne, in all fairness to Whole Foods, it's just their frozen veggies that come from China, including the "California Mix".  But that really raised a lot of basic integrity issues.

I love my fresh veggies that I have been able to get from my garden for about the past two weeks or so! I used to be a Whole Foods patron until I heard that! It makes me wonder what other little secrets they are disguising behind the attractiveness of their stores! I am not generally suspicious by nature but I also want to be an informed consumer! The cherries from my tree are long gone, either to me or the birds that I had to fend off to get them! Those cherries look awesome and the cakes do too!

What great information.  People in other parts of the country seem to forget that D.C. is a vibrant living city with neighborhoods that each have their own character.  Great photos and great information.

Pat the cake table looks where i need to be :) nice pics!

Pat- Open air farmer's markets are my favorite place to purchase things for the table!!!!!!!!!! Wonderful photos!
