Rehoboth Beach Delaware is known as the Nation's Summer Capital because of the large number of Washingtonians who vacation here in summer. With a mile-long boardwalk on the Atlantic Ocean, Rehoboth has long been a summer playground. Recently, however, shopping has become a major pasttime in the area with hundreds of tax-free factory outlet stores on Route 1.
Originally founded as a Christian resort in 1873, the town was first known as the Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association. In 1879, when the railroad was extended to Rehoboth and brought more visitors, it was renamed The Rehoboth Beach Association. The town's year-round population of 1,261 now swells to more than 75,000 in summer.
Besides the ocean, Rehoboth's mile-long boardwalk offers walking, jogging, cycling (October-April), amusements, night life, candy shops, french fry stands, and more. Downtown Rehoboth has numerous shops, restaurants and bars. The Rehoboth bandstand hosts numerous entertainment events during the summer.
Rehoboth is also well-known for its big annual events, including Fourth of July Fireworks, Punkin Chunkin, the Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddler's Convention, and the Jazz Festival in fall.
