CLearwater Beach FLorida 33767 - For many of you who have been familiar with Clearwater Beach for any period of time longer than 5 years you've seen dramatic changes to the landscape - what was once a great place for locals, snowbirds, and vacationers from around the county and world to come and enjoy is now dominated by large condo developments.
When the City Leaders began to pursue "redevelopment" what followed has been a fast and furious leveling of little Mom & Pop motels and smaller locally owned rental properties to huge, luxury condo developments. We have actually lost over 1200 hotel/motel beds in Clearwater Beach in the last couple of years.
So why wouldn't expensive, luxury condos be a "good thing" for Clearwater Beach? Well don't get me wrong, they are magnificant properties that have provided may of us with a good living - but when you look at the bigger picture you realize that most of these condos are not occupied the majority of the year and the beach community and the beach businesses are seeing a dramatic impact on their businesses. Locals know how much of our local infrastructure is supported bu tourists - with 1200 less beds that's a lot of people who have gone somewhere else to vacation.
There are some things in the works to make it more attractive for developers to build Hotels in Clearwater Beach rather than more condos - we'll have to wait and see what happens.....

I guess it's a toss up of smaller - traditional MOM & POP stops or the bigger, fancy, expensive lush resorts as a trade. I guess this is one battle where the money talks louder than old tradition.
EXCELLENT post! I personally miss all of the smaller motels and cottages we used to have along the beach for vacationers!
