Destin Restaurants Close Doors

Due to the economic slowdown in Destin and lack of the area's visitors several area restaurants have closed their doors. Most notable was Criolla's on Hwy. 30A. Oh how I loved that restaurant. I remember a wonderful mean there with my mother who was here on vacation many years ago and it was the best meal and service that I had ever experienced. It quickly became a favorite, but chef and owner Johnny Earles closed his doors and opened up a real estate office instead. I will miss Criolla's which found National fame along the Gulf Coast.

Now chef Tim Crehan has closed his doors to the Beach Walk Restaurant, Copper Grill and Bluz Grill and Bar. There were 100 employees let go from the closing of these three restaurants. Tim hopes to reopen next year when business and visitors return. I also read where two Ruby Tuesday's were closing their doors. The New Orleans themed Royal B Restaurant came and went in a hurry. I don't think they made it even a year. Brusters Ice Cream enjoyed 6 years in Destin, but also had to close their business this past summer.

Destin just does not have the ability to keep all of these businesses up and running in a down economy and people are not eating out as much. It should be interesting to see how many other closures we will soon have. Quite frankly, it is getting hard to even find a restaurant open for business for dinner or lunch in the month of December. Personally, I think I could get people through the door of any reasonably priced restaurant right now. That seems to be the main problem is that they overprice themselves and then have to close. What ever happened to the days of a good home cooked meal for $5.99 includes your drink and dessert?

On the flip side, the real estate here is "hot" Red Hot if you ask me. There are so many incredible deals right now and it is such a great time to pick up a piece of paradise for a low, low price. I suspect buyers will soon realize this and come in groves.
