Moving Tips - Relocating or Moving to a New Home in SWFL!

The reason packing is such a hassle is that not only you have to pack it all before you move-out, you have to unpack it when you move-in. If done efficiently, unpacking can be easier and quicker, so you can start enjoying your new home in no time!

The first step is to collect your packing materials. You will need:

Wrapping paper: Avoid using old newspapers to prevent ink from getting on your valuables.

Cartons: Buy moving boxes in assorted sizes, or you can get free boxes at the Publix, Albertsons or any other supermarket's produce department. You can also check our Bed Bath and Beyond and Target. Be sure to get there early so you can really get nice quality ones. You may also want to check out a local liquor store and you can use these nicely divided sturdy boxes for glasses, vases, etc.

Sealing Tape: The best kind to use for moving purposes is the plastic 2" wide. Avoid duct tape or masking tape.

Magic Marker: Mark your boxes with labels such as "fragile", "this side up", "heavy" or "kitchen", "storage".

Scissors and Sharp Knife

You can also buy Styrofoam pellets or foam peanuts for added protection. An inexpensive way could be plastic grocery or trash bags.

A good suggestion would be to start collecting boxes early and pack one or two a day. You can do so with items you know you won't use until the day you move, like linens and extra dishes.

  1. Seal the bottom well before filling boxes up and remember to pack the heaviest items toward the bottom of the box and top it off with lighter items. Try not to exceed a weight of 50 pounds per box.
  2. You can keep clothing and garments on the hanger and cover with plastic. This will avoid dust and prevent damage during the move, as well as easier organization on move-in.
  3. If you're using a mover, empty out your drawers for them. If you're doing it yourself, it's your choice, and you may replace the full drawers once the furniture is loaded.
  4. Don't pack aerosol or flammable containers.
  5. Small hat and shoe boxes can be consolidated and packed into large boxes.
  6. Pots and pans can be nested, individually wrapped, one insde another. Use the same procedure for bowls.
  7. Cups and glasses may also be nested and 3 or 4 wrapped in a bundle.
  8. It's best to pack your small kitchen appliances (blender, toaster, can opener, coffeemaker, etc.) together in one or two boxes rather than mixing them up with other goods.
  9. Wrap each item individually.

In all instances, after you have packed each box, if there are small spaces empty, wad-up some packing paper and fill in the spaces.
