Jacksonville Florida was once a sleepy town many people called a "south Georgia town." It just didn't feel like the rest of Florida in the sense of places like Miami and Orlando.
In 1996, Jacksonville won the right to a professional football team and the rest is history. They say when a city hits 1,000,000 people and gets a professional sports team things change. They're right, and for Jacksonville the Jaguars have been really great. Go Jaguars!
Downtown still has buildings from a bygone era alongside skyscrapers. The downtown living revival was slowed by the real estate downturn but is poised to take off again when the market rebounds.

The Main Street Bridge is one of Jacksonville's signature landmarks. It is blue by day and shines by night, thanks to the 2005 Super Bowl. If your city has ever had a Super Bowl, you know how things are spiffed up and trotted out to make a great impression on the visiting world. Jacksonville's first Super Bowl was no exception. How did this affect the Main Street Bridge? New paint job and lights! The Main Street Bridge joins the North and South Banks right in the heart of downtown.
The River Club's two-story lounge sits at the top of the Modis Building. The River Club is a Jacksonville business landmark.
The Jacksonville Landing view from the River Club. The Landing is a downtown shopping mall with restaurants, shops and a large outdoor area. Boats use the day docks regularly and also anchor in the river when special events happen. This is one of the major places to party during the Florida-Georgia weekend!
The Jaguars Stadium is definitely one of our favorite landmarks!
The St Johns River from the River Club. The River is a constant theme running through Jacksonville. Three miles wide at its widest point, flowing north to the ocean, it provides miles of beautiful waterfront for residents and visitors to enjoy, as well as opportunities for commerce.
Hope you enjoy downtown Jacksonville's eye candy!

Gorgeous! I haven't been to the River Walk in years. Is it still a good hot spot? I have lots of family in Jax and St. Augustine, but we usually meet in St. Augustine.
Frank and Sharon~
I felt as if I had visited your fair town. The photos had me flying over the water and above the crowds...
We see this almost every year flying by on 95, but it looks like we ought to spend a bit more time.
Donna, I just love this bridge! So when you come to visit let me know and we can have a meetup!
Lisa, the Riverwalk hasn't really ever taken off like they hoped, if you're talking about the South bank where the Friendship Fountain is (got to get a good shot of that and put it in this post). The Museum of Science and History is there, some office buildings, restaurants and a few high rises. The real action is on the North bank where the Landing is, and down past the former ship yards, the Veterans Memorial Arena, the Suns baseball field and the Jaguars Stadium. There are some restaurants going towards San Marco but nothing really vibrant on the South Bank. Come on up for a visit and let's meet up!
Asheville, thank you for the compliment!
David, you would find our city a great place to visit!
Those photos are incredible. I've only been to Jacksonville once, but I know it's a great place!
Beautiful pictures, I've been to Florida many times, only once to Jacksonville and that was some 30 years ago! What a change. Thanks for sharing those great pix!
Darrell, thanks! Jacksonville is one beautiful city and I'm grateful to C-Tann for the opportunity/nudge to write this post!
Laura, Jacksonville has changed a whole lot from 30 years ago. Come on back! You're welcome :)
Frank & Sharon - Great photos. I have never visited Jacksonville before. I did not realize it was such a big and beautiful city.
Thanks, Kari. Jacksonville is one of Florida's best kept secrets! It is still very livable with lots of big city amenities and miles and miles of waterfront - river, intracoastal, creeks, ocean!
