The news came out at the beginning of this year's Hurricane Football season, that this would be the last year they play at The Orange Bowl.
Yes the Orange Bowl is in shambles, yes it is in need of major repairs, but it is THE ORANGE BOWL!! To think of all the games I watched from the student section, from all the times we had to pay exorbitant prices for a parking space to one of the nearby home owners, the fights, the screaming, the canon, the cheerleaders, the band, the beer, the cheering, the laughing....oh the memories.
It had not really sunk in until I read Get It While You Can. Three more games? That's it? I feel really sad and although have only made it to one or two home games as an alumni, to think that this landmark will be gone is overwhelming.
......the victories.....the touch-downs......the pride.......the tears.......
What will happen to the Orange Bowl? Nobody knows.....there's talk about building the new Marlin Stadium there. Why does this always happen in Miami? Why can't we maintain our landmarks, are we a disposable society?
......November 10th will be a sad day, the last Hurricane Football Game at The Orange Bowl.

Ines, say it isn't so!!! I can not remember a time when there was no Orange Bowl. It just will not be the same to not have a major football game played at the Orange Bowl during the holiday season :(
Bummer the end of an era. I always loved watching games from the Orange Bowl.
George - the place is no longer safe. It's in shambles....it's a shame. We'll be playing in the Dolphin stadium. I say use the land for low-income housing......we need some of that in Miami.

Very sad when these great old buildings that are so apart of "us" ... We all grew up watching the Orange Bowl.. Now they have 5 million different Bowl games... its crazy. I saw a game there ..... well I won't date myself... awhile ago.. Didn't realize they were taking it down. They are rebuilding and building alot of new places here in NY and Philly but they haven't torn the old ones down... YET
Lisa - thanks, it makes you wonder about cities' intent with regards to maintenance of their old buildings.
Desiree - we take the OB for granted and drive by it often. It has become part of the landscape and a symbol in our city. At least we have the memories.
I'm not a Hurricane fan but my neighbor is die-hard...I just know the stadium was in bad shape.

Ines, what a shame, but when we built the new Tiger Stadium now called Comerica Park, it was sad, but it just cost too much to renovate. Then they built Ford Field, new for the same reason. Maybe they will just rebuild on the same spot. I know they sold off grass, seats etc here to raise money. Hopefully, whatever they decide they still call it the Orange Bowl.
Ines, This is a subject very dear to my heart. As you know I was born and raised in Miami and went to the Orange bowl many times over the years to watch the Dolphins and the Hurricanes play. In my opinion it was one of the BEST Stadiums to watch a game. You really become part of the action. The whole stadium rocks when it gets wild. I know the stadium needs repair but what happen to pride and tradition? The problem with America sometimes we are a society of fast food and fast everything. When you travel outside of the US you really get an eye opening experience of how people still use things that are very old. What is wrong with a full renovation? Being its Miami it probably means someone won't get the grease. That is a whole other story about Miami.
I can feel your pain. Living by the Rose Bowl for years and in a community focused on preservation we were lucky enough to save it over the years but there is really no way to make it into a modern facility. There is always a concern that is will become so obsolete that no one will want to use it. But, the Rose Bowl was a part of my life and I can't imagine it being torn down. I'm sure you feel the same about the Orange Bowl!
Ines, That's so sad to hear. Here they are taking down Shea Stadium to build a new one and while it may need a few repairs, it certainly doesn't need to be demolished. It's sad for me to hear that about the Rose Bowl too.
Neal - you can read that it is in bad shape, but until you go and see it for yourself, then you know it is really bad.

Missy - there is talk about using the grounds of the Orange Bowl for a stadium for the Marlins - I personally think it's a horrible location.....but in Miami, nothing is ever logical.
Matt - the stadium is really beyond repair - you even wonder if the structure is safe. I think it's too late to restore it, it was a problem of maintenace while it was not being used. It's really sad, and I do feel the same about the Orange Bowl....I'm glad my kids were able to enjoy games there as well.......how about your great post (....sorry.....I HAD to do it) : )

Carole - the location of the stadium is a bit absurd to begin with. It's a residential area and people make a living from the stadium and parking. I wonder how they feel.

Thats Sad!! you know the odd Locations of the Orange Bowl, and the Original Miami Arena, I s tough to Sell. Do you rememebr going to the Oronge bowl Parades downtown?

This just doesn't seem right.. heck we revamped the Colosseum for the Olympics and also upgraded the Rose Bowl.. surely someone can come up with an idea to keep this classic bowl..
Tom - the Miami Arena is the perfect example of letting a perfectly good arena go to waste.....and that one had no maintenance issues, but it didn't have tradition either. I do remember all kinds of Orange Bowl events.....hard to swallow, no?

Do they have any intentions of building a stadium (O2), or just keep using Dolphin stadium?
Debra- the plan is to build the Marlins Stadium in its place. UM will continue to use Dolphin as far as I understand.
Some day I would like to attend game over there!! I'm one of the few woman that loves hockey & football!
