THIS is a Gopher Tortoise and in Florida it is a

protected, endangered species. A friend of mine found out just how serious
Florida takes it's job in protecting this turtle. I won't mention the vendetta
taking place, but when a clean-up of the area was attempted by the owner
it took less than 5 minutes for the Florida Fish and Wildlife people to arrive
on the scene. My friend, a veteran of 2 tours in Iraq and currently going
through the police academy was stunned at the uncompromising position
taken by the FWC. A consultation with an attorney lessened the fear of
being denied a new, post-war career, but it's a lesson other's may learn
from. I guess what gripes me is that builders come in and bulldoze an entire
subdivision without penalty, while someone who has stood by our county in
time of war is being intimidated by the prospect of losing a livelihood.

Not only that, but his father had just passed away and he was using the cleanup
as therapy. Sometimes life is not fair, but sometimes I just wish it wasn't fair
to someone who deserves "not-fair". Thanks for listening and if you know
anyone who has this species on their property, do not disburb - call in the proper
authorities to relocate - much better that way!
