Hurricane season 2011 is over

Hurricane season 2011 has officially ended and what a relief it is.
Hurricane season here in central Florida is June 1 to November 30 each year.

Now is as good a time as any to prepare for next year.
For help creating your disaster plan, visitwww.floridadisaster.org. Or visit the Volusia CountyOffice after Hurricane Charley emergency management web site athttp://www.volusia.org/emergency/ for updated information and a PDF disaster preparedness checklist. There is also lots of information at the FEMA web site atwww.fema.gov/
We were fortunate here in Ormond By The Sea and central Florida that we didn't need to implement our disaster plans this year but it is never too soon to be prepared.

This is a photo of our office following Hurricane Charley in 2004 which took the roof off the building.

Hurricane season 2011 had 19 tropical storms and seven of them became hurricanes, including three major hurricanes. this is the third-highest total (tied with 1887, 1995, and 2010) since recor. ds began in 1851 and is well above the average of 11. However, according to NOAA, the number of hurricanes and major hurricanes is only slightly above the average of six and two, respectively. This year’s totals include a post-storm upgrade of Tropical Storm Nate to hurricane status, and the addition of a short-lived, unnamed tropical storm that formed in early September between Bermuda and Nova Scotia. This unnamed storm, along with several other weak, short-lived named storms, could have gone undetected without modern satellite technology.

Only hurricane Irene hit the United States in 2011, and that was the first one to do so since Ike hit Texas in 2008.
