The answer is no, not many. If you are one of the few who is buying now you are probably stuck with Citizens. These guys are backed by the state of Florida and their prices are brutal. But it's what you are left with when nobody else will write. And that includes the companies that advertise about bundling your policies day and night on TV and the internet like State Farm, All State, Farmers, etc. They won't even talk to you about it.
The sad part is we as a state, and particularly South Florida, are being punished for a hurricane that occurred years ago in Homestead. We have been pretty safe since then, and that includes Wilma of 2006. Fact is more hurricanes hit Texas and the Carolinas than Florida. I should know, I have lived in South Florida since 1995 and I was in South Carolina in 1989 when they just got clobbered. And guess what, their insurance premiums are still reasonable and everyone is still writing. So why South Florida? My guess is all of the fraud with homeowners taking advantage of the storms to cash in on a new roof. It is rampant. My message to all buyers writing contracts during hurricane season, which is now by the way, check premiums and if anyone is writing before you start writing. There is no worse way to kill a deal than to write a contract and than have to sweep it under the rug because you can't get a policy prior to closing.
