Bayport, Florida - The Landmark that Was
Bayport in Hernando County, Florida, is located where the Weeki Wachee River enters the Gulf of Mexico. At first glance, Bayport appears as a sleepy little village with just a few inhabitants and a waterfront park that attracts boaters, fishermen, and sightseers. Yet, the casual visitor would be surprised to learn of Bayports historical signficance to the area.

In its early days, Bayport was known as a port of commerce that developed in the 1850s as a port for the cotton trade. The site also played a role in the American Civil War when Union naval squadrons blocked the coastline of Florida to cut off supplies to the State. As shipping via larger waterways became difficult, smaller waterways such as the Weeki Wachee river gained in importance. Eventually, even those were affected by Union blockades and various smaller battles took place between Union and Confederate troops.

Later, Bayport operated as a transportation hub for lumber and various agricultural products. Its operation as a port ended with the arrival of the railroad to Brooksville in 1885. A historical marker explains the history of Bayport.

Today Bayport serves as a waterside park with convenient access to the Gulf of Mexico for boating, fishing, and other watersporting activities. Just recently, Hernando County in cooperation with the Southwest Florida Water Management District expanded the park to include a new picnic area and a second boardwalk.
The fishing pier attracts many locals and visitors alike to try their luck. In the evenings, many people gather here to await the glorious sunsets that can be observed over the Gulf of Mexico.

Bayport is a fun place and knowing its history certainly an intriguing place to visit.
It's worth it!

This is a very nice look at Bayport and the history that goes with the area.
Silvia - The Civil War era was one of my favorite topics in my history class from high school. I didn't know the role that Bayport played in keeping trade flowing through the waterways in the midst of the blockades.
Sivia, beautiful pictures! I've been thinking of the beach, and my need "to go there" for several days. This just reinforced it!
Don, thank you. Bayport is so quaint that everyone is surprised to learn about its history.
Donna, I think even a lot of the people who have lived here for a long time don't know.
Connie, I completely understand these "needs" and am glad I could help you along. Enjoy your time at the beach!
Silvia - great photos, especially the sunsets, and great information on Bayport.

Great post. It's great to understand the history since it tends to put a region's development in context.
Toula, I go there quite often to watch the sunsets! Always different, always beautiful. Glad you enjoyed them.
David, thank you. I'm always amazed at the history of places, especially those where nothing seem to remain and even the people forget. You wonder where did it all go.
Silvia,
Very nice post... I wanted to enter this but ran out of time.
