Jensen Beach is a fisherman's dream, a Snow Bird's nest or a great place to start out your life. We are a coastal community. The main land of the town is located just off of the Indian River; this river is great for fishing and boating. The Indian River leads to the inlet so you can head right out into the ocean. Yes, you can get to the Bahamas from here. Then there is the island, Hutchinson Island, it runs from Hobe Sound to Fort Pierce. It is a very long barrier island it helps create the river. It also has some of the most pristine beaches on the east coast. The interesting thing about living on the island is you can use 2 water fronts just by crossing the street. If one morning you feeling like fishing from the beach you go to the ocean or if you want calmer waters just cross the street and fish the river. It's not the grass is greener syndrome on the island. It's the waters calmer or the fish are biting on the other side of the street. The causeway that connects the main land to the island was redone with picnic tables, play grounds, pavilions, fishing piers and FREE public boat ramps with parking. Speaking of free, there are many public access beaches up and down the island with free access and parking.
Jensen Beach is still one of those town where you can walk to school (elementary or high school), the grocery stores, shopping, dinning (and much more) or just relax down by the river. There is a weekly event thrown by the village called Jammin in Jensen, which gives you a chance to meet with your neighbors, local businesses and local artisans. Once a year we have a big weekend party or street fair called the Pineapple Festival; There are a few more through out the year, I will post them as they come up. I know what your thinking the name may seem odd for a Florida town festival. Pineapples that is an Hawaiian thing and Florida is an Orange thing. There is a good explanation. Jensen's early history it was a pineapple plantation, there were pineapples as far as you could see, we were one of the largest producers of pineapple in the early 1900s. We even have "wild" pineapple that happen in your yard every now and then. They are the domestic type you find in the grocery store and you can eat them. If you have a green the thumb or not, You can just stick a pineapple top in the ground and watch it grow; it will take two years to produce fruit. I don't have a green thumb and I have 3 just from the tops of my grocery store pineapple. The village has even managed to preserve the plantation main house and the cottages. It is being renovated right now. I can't wait to see it.
Jensen Beach is very unique, not only can you find the Mom & Pop shops but you have the chains stores and restaurants too. East of US 1 you can find every thing from the mall to the wholesale club chains. Yes there are 2 of them now. Don't worry they all allow flip flops. The nice thing is the Mom & Pops have benefited from the chain stores. They have brought more shoppers to the area.
The homes are extremely varied. You can have a home that is the Old Florida, we have some that have just been relocated and designated as historic. Then there are the modern just built state-of-art home. The prices very from ocean front to a first time home buyers price. If you compare the prices to other counties, you get much more for the money here. This a good place for a commuter, Jensen Beach is located on the county line of Saint Lucie, which puts you half way between the Martin & Saint Lucie counties' I95 and Turnpike ramps. Saint Lucie county has been actively recruiting research facilities to move and/or relocate here your commute might not need the interstate or turnpike. The area also has some very nice Mobil home and 55+ communities that that are just right for the active retiree.
The mild winters make this a great place to stick your feet in the sand. If you are worried about the Florida summer, Jensen Beach gets this great ocean breeze, that keeps the temperature down. Just think, your electric bill will be much smaller then your gas bill. No mothballs needed because you don't need to store all those extra cloths for next winter. I only own one coat and I didn't use it last year. I do have more then one bathing suit; 3 to be exact but who's counting. Just don't forget to bring you sun screen.
