
Last year I read about a State of Florida sponsored program to encourage homeowners to have their home inspected to determine readiness for a windstorm. The state would pay certified wind mitigation inspectors to inspect homes and provide a written report of all aspects meeting or exceeding current construction standards relating to wind ratings. The program recognizes that certain construction techniques and methods make a dwelling better able to withstand the damges incurred during a windstorm.
I was skeptical but the certified inspector was very thorough, explained the program in detail and pointed out some additional things which I could do to further enhance my homes' readiness. There was no attempt to sell anything ! He filled out the paperwork and submitted it to the state. When the report came back to me I submitted it to my insurance carrier.
As a result of the wind mitigation survey my most recent homeowners policy was reduced $ 1724.00 for the current year and every year going forward !!!
The inspection considers type of roof line, certain nailing patterns, shutters and braces, brick vs wood, etc. All in all I was vey impressed with all aspects of the program and especially how it benefits citizens of our state.
