Everyone that remembers commercials for mortgages in the 1980's remembers that commercial that came on with the powerful New York Accent...
"Phil Rizzuto here for The Money Store!"
Phil Rizzuto was already a household name thanks to being a New York Yankee MVP ...but he brought advertising on TV for Mortgages to an all time high!
As a baseball announcer, his catch phrase was "Holy Cow!" during his 40 seasons as a New York Yankees Broadcaster.
Phil Rizzuto was from a generation of amazing Yankees so his on the field exploits were overshadowed by some of the bigger names of the day. Albeit, anyone who had stats like his while only standing 5' 6" tall would have trouble being noticed. In fact, he was passed over 15 times in being inducted into the Hall of Fame until Ted Williams gave an impassioned speech regarding Rizzuto's right to be there.
Phil Rizzuto's knack for color commentary spilled out of baseball and into the world of TV, commercials and ...lending?? His warmth and charisma helped to increase the number of people doing mortgages over the phone without meeting their local loan officer at their branch of the bank.
Phil Rizzuto and The Money Store really helped revolutionize the marketing of the Mortgage Industry.
Well... the sad news is that Phil Rizzuto has passed at 89 years old.
