Today we call it “accident chasing,” and in most states, it’s outlawed. But in the early 19th century, Key West had a vigorous industry based on accident chasing!
In the early 19th century, when a vessel ran aground on the reef, sailboats would race from Key West to save the crew and claim the cargo. “Finders keepers” was the rule, and the “findings” were valuable
enough – enough to risk life and limb! Articles of gold, silver, fabrics, wine, iron tools – everything of commercial value was salvaged (sometimes, even the boat itself).
February 27 marks the 2011 Annual Schooner Wharf Bar Wreckers Cup Race Series, with sailing vessels of all sizes racing to the reef in modern (but just as competitive as in the olden days!) re-enactment of Key West's long history of salvaging shipwrecks.
Just as in the 19th century, the first one to reach the reef wins! No swordfights will establish bragging rights, trophies, and prizes. The race starts at 1:00 pm at the Key West Harbor. Note that it’s mandatory to attend the Captains Meeting, held at 7:00 pm the Saturday before the race. Actual race time
is scheduled for 1:00 pm Sunday. The Awards Ceremony and Party is at 7:00 pm on Sunday eveningm and includes BBQ and a video of the race. For more information, call (305) 292-3302.
