This specimen hangs in front of the Bass Pro Shop at Destin Commons, Destin, Florida. Many of our tourists like to take their picture with standing with this big fellow. The second "Jaws" movie was filmed partly in Destin Harbor, some years ago. This shark may have been used in the movie. I remember seeing the first "Jaws" movie,... I was afraid to take a shower for a week!

Robert, we lived in Kansas when the first Jaws movie came out. We came down to Padre Island for a vacation; my husband finally convinced me there were no sharks in the water. Just after that we were driving down the beach in our VW (popping jelly fish, we were really young) and we saw a whole line of sharks someone had caught. So much for "no sharks" in those warm waters (LOL).
I've seen many up close to the beach here in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. I recall mentioning to a mother that here 10-12 year old son was swimming near to a shark, and being told not to worry about it, "He's a skin diver and swims around sharks often." I left, and didn't read anything in news about a shark attack that day, so maybe the mother was right, or the kid was lucky. Anyway, me, I don't swim with sharks, period... It's a little like playing Russian roulette.
Poor sharks... they get such a bad reputation and in all actuality it is so little deserved. Great Local info though!

Robert....I too remember seeing the first Jaws movie in Miami while in high school. I honestly say, that after that movie, I only swan in concrete pools with stipes and a drain. Pretty bad for living in Miami huh? But, I got over that and finally got back in the water and learned to snorkel and catch lobsters in the keys in the late 80's. I live in Gainesville now, and our "fishin spot" now is Cedar Key. We love fishing!
