I spent some time this afternoon getting ready for a hard-freeze headed our way. The weather gurus say we are in for 2-days of hard freeze nights. Those of us in the Gainesville-Alachua County areahaven't had two consecutive nights with a hard freeze for over 5 years.
Brrrrrr, it's gonna be cold !
I don't want any more exploding hoses, so I detached all my nozzles. I can't tell you how many garden hoses I have ruined because they froze and "exploded". Remember, I grew up in Miami....I never knew a freeze until 1995.
Next on my To-DO list to prepare for the "freeze" was watering all my shurbs and plants in the beds around the house. I wanted to give then all a good drink to help them handle a freeze better.
All my orchids and potted plants also got a good drink, and they will come inside tomorrow afternoon. I have all the junky sheets piled outside next to the plants that need a blanket.
I cleaned and filled the bird-baths and put out more birdseed in all my feeders. (I love my birds). But I know those blue jays, chickadees, and blue birds will be really, REALLY mad when that birdbath is frozen over.
So tomorrow night, all my faucets will be dripping, dripping, and I will have 2008's first fire in my wonderful fireplace!! WOOHOO!
Happy New Year Everyone!! It'll be a great 2008!

Jan - We haven't had much "winter" here. It was 75 on Christmas. So this will be a nice change. I see your Football Guys did great today. My Gators lost today, yet it was a great bowl game. We gotta pull for all the SEC guys! I'm pulling for LSU. (I am a football nut).
We're just coming out of a few days of 20 degrees and are heading up to the 50s in the next few days. My hoses have been detached for months!! Then again.... this is New England. :-)

Speaking about exploding water hoses:
Our Company Colorado Advanced Technology LLC developed and patented a so-called Freeze-Free Water Hose (FFWH). A small air compressor, which is a part of whole assembly
removes water from a hose and a faucet in just about 30-40 seconds, depending on the length of your hose.
So, while installed you don't have to disassemble the hose at subfreezing temperatures. The US patent 7,198,057 "Freeze-Free Water Hose. Works very reliably in Colorado, where we live.
The price for a FFWH on a web is wrong. It is $300.00 for the whole new assembly.
