In the early hours of Saturday April 7th the Jacksonville Humane Society located on Beach Blvd cought fire and burned to the ground, trapping many animals inside.
Many firefighters fought 30 foot flames to save the some odd 200 animals in the shelter. Four firefighters were injured in total with one currently in the burn center in Gainesville Fl.
It has been reported that all but 2 dogs made it out of the fire thanks to the heroics of the Jacksonville FireFighers. However, the roof caved in directly over the cattery. Only 4 out of approx 100 cats are assumed to have made it out of the burning building.
The fire, which authorities believe to have been an accident starting in the laundry room or in the wiring in the attic, has truly been a tragedy. Jacksonville Humane Society runs "No Kill" Shelters, and it breaks everyones hearts to know that so many animals have suffered. Not only has the shelter suffered a great loss of animals, it will currently be unable to accept any more animals due to lack of space and resources.
Since the fire Saturday morning there has been an outpouring of support from the community. It is expected that approx $30,000 has been raised so far. However, it pails in comparison to the Millions of dollars in damage. The Jacksonville Humane Society needs our help. Adoptions of these animals are expected to begin in the early part of next week (April 16th-17th). All of the animals involved in the fire are currently undergoing health evaluations prior to being put up for adoption. If you are unable to adopt, please consider a donation. You can donate several ways.
The Jacksonville Humane Society is a no kill shelter and is funded on donations. We must pull together and help bring back a vital part of our community.
