Seminole County, FL Residents Encouraged To Rally for Education

As a mother of two boys who attend Seminole County Public Schools in Central Florida, I too am concerned about how budget cuts in the County will effect the level of service and education that my children will receive.

In talking with another parent, I was told about this very important rally, which will be held next week to address this very topic. The below Press Release has been published by the Seminole County Coucil of PTA's to encourage parents and residents to make a stand on how important education is and what should be done to preserve it through these challenging economic times.

Please pass this message along to everyone you know...

PRESS RELEASE

A Call To Action

When: February 11, 2009 - 4:00 P.M.

Where: Lyman High School Stadium, Longwood, Florida

Lake Mary - Seminole County Council PTA is concerned that as state revenues decline, further cuts to budgets will have a negative impact on the lives of the children in Seminole County and Florida. Currently, Florida is at the bottom (50th) of the ladder in funding education and children's services. Seminole County Council PTA is a part of the largest child advocacy organization in this Nation and we want to ensure that a stable source of funding flows into the state's coffers to meet the budget needs of Florida's children.

The policies of the past have contributed to the under funding of education and children's services and depleted the revenue stream. In spite of the economic problems, there are actions the Legislature can take to generate additional revenue and minimize further cuts. These strategies include closing existing tax loopholes and comprehensive tax restructuring.

Seminole County citizens and members of 60+ PTAs in Seminole County will join together to advocate for the children of Seminole County and Florida. The Legislature must begin the process of tax reform, by closing loopholes in sales tax exemptions and find a dedicated stream of funding for Florida's Public Education System, as well as other children's services.
