The last editorial piece (page 81) in the February 9, 2009 "The New Yorker" is titled "The Ponzi Scheme," and it is a commentary and chronicle of the years and years that real estate was the industry and commodity of Florida. It also shows why it has now vaporized.
I checked to see if the magazine had posted that piece by George Packer at their web site so that you could read it without charge, but they hadn't.
If you don't subscribe to "The New Yorker," or don't regularly buy it at the newsstand, stop in at your public library or check out the magazine rack at your nearby Barnes & Noble.
It is a worthy and thought provolking accounting of how our industry went bad in Florida, and it seems to me it applies elsewhere as well.
