So I'm sure everyone has heard that the wildfires in Georgia are threatening the Florida border. And some of you might know that there is a wildfire burning on the Gulf Coast of Florida near Naples.
So with the combination of the SubTropical Storm Andrea and two fires, the first thing I smelled when I walked outside with the dogs early this morning was fire.
It wasn't nearby - in fact the nearest one is clear across the state with a huge body of water (Everglades) between us.
The thing that this illustrates is that Florida is DRY. We need to remember that with our drought and water restrictions, smoking outside is just NOT a good idea. Disposing of cigarettes, charcoal embers etc are dangerous right now.
Use common sense and put it in a container that will not release sparks.
When you're driving on the highway, don't throw it out the window!
If you're towing a car, don't let the chains drag and create sparks either...
And be careful working on your car! A stray spark can ignite hundreds of acres.
This is an important message as July 4th creeps up and Firework vendors are sending out mailings.
How about this year we barbecue with Gas?? or maybe Electric Grills??
How about we go to the beach and watch professional displays of fireworks shot only over water??
Or how about think of this as a great excuse to stop smoking?
Just another PSA for Florida!
