Vilano Beach Publix Groundbreaking is today, January 12th at 4 p.m. at 120 Vilano Road, the former home of the Surf Hut. From St. Augustine, cross the Usina Bridge (aka Vilano Bridge) to Vilano Beach. Take a right at the light and a right onto Vilano Road at the stop sign to the white tent on the right. The Sheriff's office will be on hand to direct traffic and parking.
Last night the North Shores Improvement Association's Board of Directors heard informally from one of the developers, Joe Lelonek of Land Design South in preparation for today's groundbreaking. He announced that they signed a contract with VJ Usina Contracting last Friday, January 7th for demolition and clearing of the site covering the first 75 days. Once plans are released from the county, which should be soon, the demolition will begin and is planned to be completed in 2 to 3 weeks from now.
Then, Joe, explained, expect about 1 month of truckload after truckload of fill dirt as they add 2 to 3 feet of dirt to the site. During this time they will also be rerouting a force main that runs through the middle of the property. Additionally, they will be getting the final plans from Publix.
Rough timeline was 30 days to get Publix plans, 30 days to go out to bid and 30 days to get permits equating to about 3 to 4 months before they will start construction ("going vertical"). A rough estimate is 8 months construction will a completion expected around this time next year.
Retail space is available with the smallest space of 600 sq. ft. ideal for a dry cleaner according to Joe. There is space for two small restaurants that are quick serve/take-out as the space is 1000 to 1500 sq. ft.
Please attend today's groundbreaking to get more details. See you under the white tent!
