The Ringling Museum of Art was established in the 1920's by business and circus tycoon, John Ringling and his wife, Mable. Originally commissioned to showcase his own collection of masterpieces, the Museum is recognized today for housing one of the world's largest collections of the Baroque masters. The museum is home to an internationally known collection of more than 10,000 pieces of art, including works from masters such as Rubens, van Dyck, Velasquez, Titian, El Greco, and more.
Overlooking Sarasota Bay and the barrier island of Longboat Key, the museum is part of the Ringling Estate which also includes the Ringling mansion, Cà d'Zan, the Circus Museums, the Rose Garden, and the Historic Asolo Theater.
The wonderful courtyard of the Museum features casts of original antiquities and renaissance sculptures along with two Italian replica fountains, but it is the towering cast of Michelangelo's David that takes center stage and has become the symbol of the City of Sarasota. The museum also regularly presents temporary exhibitions from its own collections and traveling collections in the Ulla R. and Arthur F. Searing Wing, a 30,000-square-foot expansion completed in 2007.
The museum is a wonderful part of our Sarasota cultural community and offers many public and charity events including; Courtyard Concerts, Cocktails at Cà d'Zan, Finally Friday Fest, Forks and Corks Wine and Food Festival, the UnGala Gala, Circus Weekend, the Gallery Gala, and Breakfast with Santa.
