2010 Census Paints a Detailed Picture of Surfside

The Town of Surfside is a beautiful oceanfront community located in the tropical paradise of South Florida. The Town was incorporated in 1935 and is home to approximately 5,800 residents. The Town of Surfside includes a tranquil, attractive, residential neighborhood, multi-family establishments, a traditional "home town" business district and tourist facilities that welcomes visitors year round.

2010 Census Paints a Detailed Picture of Surfside

The 2010 U.S. Census contains a tremendous amount of detail regarding the Town of Surfside, including income, ethnicity, housing, jobs, education and more. Here is a snapshot of Surfside facts:

POPULATION: The total of 5,744 is evenly split between male and female with a median age of 41.2 years, slightly younger than 2000 when it was 44.9. Eighteen percent of the population was under 18 years and 16% was 65 years and older.

HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: There are slightly more than 2,000 households in Surfside, averaging 2.4 people per home. Families, including married couples and others, made up 59% of the households.

NATIVITY AND LANGUAGE: For the first time more than half of Surfside residents are now foreign born (53%). Of the 47% born in the U.S., 18% are native Floridians. Interestingly, 64% speak a language other than English at home. Of those,68% spoke Spanish and 32% spoke another language. Forty-five percent of the non-English speakers reported that they did not speak English "very well".

GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY: Nearly 80% of Surfsiders were living in the same residence one year earlier. Eleven percent had moved during the past year from within Miami Dade. Two percent moved from another state and 7 percent from abroad.

EDUCATION: Surfsiders are well educated with 89 percent of those 25 years and over had graduated from high school and 42 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. The 2010 school enrollment in Surfside was a total of 990 with 210 in kindergarten or pre-K, 490 in elementary or high school and 290 in collage or graduate school.

TRAVEL TO WORK: 79% of Surfsiders drive to work and 7% take public transportation. Five percent work at home. The average commute? 27.2 minutes.

INCOME: The median income in 2010 had risen to $74,219. Nine percent receive retirement income other than Social Security and 26% received Social Security (averaging $ 17,591). Fourteen percent had income at or below the poverty level.

HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: Of the more than 2,000 occupied housing units, 1,400 (71 percent) were owner occupied and 570 (29 percent) renter occupied. Thirteen percent of households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. 36% had two vehicles and 7 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for mortgaged owners was $3,046, non-mortgaged owners $876, and renters $1,197.
