Wellington Celebrates Chanukah Tonight

Tonight at sundown begins the Festival of Lights. The celebration goes from tonight at sundown to Wednesday December 28th at sunset. Happy-Chanukah

Join Wellington in celebrating Chanukah at the Wellington Ampitheatre located at 12100 Forest Hill Blvd in Wellington Florida.

The celebrations begin tonight at 4 p.m. There will be 25 video games, games, latkes and donuts.

The Menorah lighting will be at 6 p.m. and will be presented by Rabbi Mendy Muskal who is the director of the Wellington Jewish Center.

Chanukah is also spelled Hanukkah. There are many different ways to spell the word because of the translation from Hebrew to English. There is no perfect English word for Chanukah.

21 centuries ago the Greeks ruled the Holy Land. A small band of brave Jews defeated one of the strongest armies on earth at that time. They reclaimed their Holy Temple and rededicated it to G-d.

The oil for the lighting of the candle had to be pure olive oil however the Greeks had defiled all the oil. But one single cruse of olive oil had made it to the Holy Temple. That one small cruse of oil was used to light the candle in the Holy Temple. That was only a one day supply of oil. But a miracle happened and that one small one day supply burned for eight days.

From then on the celebration of the festival of light - Chanukah takes place every year according to the Jewish calendar on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. It is a celebration of the "triumph of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality."
