Wellington Florida- preparing your pool for hurricanes is one of the chores we must attend to.

The most important thing to remember is that you do not drain your pool. Many people have ruined their pools by draining their pools before a hurricane. Leave the water level alone.
In emergencies where you don't have any water, you can use the water in your pool. You can take buckets of water to flush your toilets during times of no water or electricity.
You can boil the water on your gas grill in large pots and use that to heat up bath water to wash your hair and get soap on your body. You don't want to use the soap in your pool.
Turn a negative into a positive and while the power is out and you have no air conditioning; gather up the kids and go swimming in the pool. This is not just a great way to have some fun and reduce the stress but you can feel cleaner too:) You know, that hot, sticky, nasty feeling when you can't take a shower every day? After Wilma we were without power for 28 days so we made good use of our pool!
Stay safe and be prepared during the Hurricane season that is getting into full swing this time of year.

I don;t see how you guys can live undrr those conditions. But I guess I don;t have much room to talk, we have earthquakes!
Hi katerina,
This is one of the main reasons I really never wanted to live in Florida! Although NY gets hit every once in a while, we don't have to batten down the hatches the way you guys do every year. I watch the storms approaching and think "poor Florida" or "poor Gulf coast" and say a prayer for everyone's safety.
Hi Katerina, Good information to know about preparing one's pool for the coming storms.
Excellent tips Katerina! Of course that gorgeous pool makes me want to have one. The palm trees don't help when I think another New England Winter is just around the corner either.
GOOD MORNING KAT!
I see that you posted this at nearly 2am, do you sleep at all?!? These are great pool tips, especially since so many homes in FL have pools!
Have a great day,
John- With hurricanes you get days and days of notice to get ready or leave or whatever. There is no excuse to not be prepared and be safe. I am a native Californian and earthquakes don't give you any warning, or very short notive thereof. That is the difference! You also are quickly becoming known as the 'fire state'.
Seem like a lot of rule and things to do we just have to keep the ice out of the pool.
Great topic for a series of blogs!
These are great tips and hopefully Florida will not have to suffer from Gustav. My husband and I just returned to Birmingham from Orange Beach near Pensacola, and we actually had mostly wonderful weather. The area might not be so lucky with this next storm. I hope Wellington doesn't get slammed again.
Take care,
Thank you, I have recently sold a few homes with pools and only living here 3 years, i have informed my clients of their evac level and what they should have on hand and how to pack and travel for their pets, and now i can inform them of what to do with the pool Thank you...
Katerina, I can't believe it's almost hurricane season! Having such a long season is the ONLY thing about Florida that would worry me, otherwise I think I would be heading down about now!
Great advice. I've heard the 'patio furniture in the pool' suggestion. Thanks for dispelling that myth. Flying chairs would not be welcomed.
Good tips for folks in the soutern states. It's time to brace ourselves for Gustav...I was in the DR early this week when it was a tropical depression just starting to pick up strength.
I have to say that out here in earthquake country, what to with a pool in a hurricane has never occurred to me which is why your post caught my attention. I am sure these are good tips for people in Florida where they seem to come with such regularity.
