Peachtree Streetcar. It's ALIVE. AGAIN!

Peachtree Street CarPeachtree Streetcar. It's ALIVE. AGAIN.

This grand proposal for Atlanta's Peachtree Street died a rather miserable death last year when the City of Atlanta found a big huge mammoth mistake in their accounting and a huge deficit in the city budget.

Midtown Atlanta residents in particular were not to sad....the proposed funding including a increased property tax to those residential (and commerical) who lived within 2 blocks (altho the exact line was never confirmed.) HELLO? Our property taxes are already up there in both the City of Atlanta and Fulton County, and an increase would only add to the "challenged" condo market in the Midtown area. And I say condo market, because most of the part of Midtown that has single family homes was "considered to far from the streetcar line, and people would not walk to Peachtree Street and use it."

Great! Just tax a select few. That idea had as many holes as a piece of swiss cheese.

Ta Da! Along comes the Federal Stimulus Money! Now, MARTA (our current public trans system), Atlanta Officials, the Midtown Alliance and the Central Atlanta Progress will pay the $600,000 needed for the engineering and feasibility studies.

Ok. Would a streetcar on Peachtree be "cool?" Maybe. But there are LOTS, and I mean LOTS of issues to be addressed. Let's hope this money is well spent on figuring out all those details and how they will address them.
