The Power of Social Media....Just In Case You Don't Believe It!

Midtown Atlanta Real Estate On Sale Today!

Writing this post almost gives me goose bumps! But when you look at the amazing power each of us has to connect with people, thanks to technology, it can be down right scary. But this story is so amazing, I just have to tell it.

It started months ago, via a review site called Yelp. Now, let me first say, if you are not using, have not used, or don't know about Yelp....DO IT! An amazing site full of reviews of restaurants and businesses alike. I've got Midtown Atlanta Real Estate reviews on my profile! Anyway, I met Joel through Yelp. We've kept in touch through Yelp, and have met at a couple of their events. That connection has recently allowed us to help Joel find his new home at Metropolis Midtown! Joel and I have since become friends on Facebook, as well as Twitter.

Since we've met, Joel has introduced me to lots of people I probably would of never met! Thanks Joel...looking forward to a long friendship!

Two weeks ago, we were at an event called Social Tuesdays. It's just a get together of guys in Atlanta to chat and cocktail (or have dinner) There, we met Wesley Anderson. An amazing person, to say the least. And someone who makes we wish "if I could turn back time...." I would of done things much different in my life up to this point. So, I'm going to make up for that time...watch out! Wes and I agreed we needed to build on this relationship, so for the next two weeks, we've been working on getting together. That finally happened yesterday over a great lunch with my partner, Ray Benitez.

Probably the best way to describe the events of lunch and what happened, and how quickly it happened.....would be to give it to you in a timeline fashion:

12-2pm Lunch with Wes and Ray at Gordon Biersch Brewery (1 block from my office)

  • Wes suggests I become "friends" with Don from Columbus. He's going to be moving to Atlanta in April and is a doctor with Emory University Hospital. Wes does tell me he's already connect with a REALTOR in Atlanta (darn it!) (and I know them!) so he does not want to "steal business" from someone, but still thinks it would be great for us to meet sometime.
  • 2pm I send a Friend Request to Don on Facebook.
  • 4:38pm I receive a Friend CONFIRMATION from Don, followed by a message that he's just arrived in Atlanta and will be here for the weekend. I respond with my schedule over the next couple days, since I'll be in the office with Office Coverage.

5:00pm Front Door to office opens, and a guy walks in who's obviously been running (shorts, t-shirt and ipod) and asks for Thom Abbott.....GUESS WHO IT IS? He's staying at a hotel just down the street. So we ended up chatting for about 30 minutes!

Now....how's THAT for making a connection. In the span of 5 hours, I further established what I know will be a long, long friendship with Wes, introduced myself to a person who lives hundreds of miles away, and then met that person, in person, within 3 hours!

Things that make you go....hmmmmmm!

Now, I want to give credit where credit is due. As I said, Wes is really an interesting person, and I wanted to share his blog with you. He mentions our lunch, but what is even more important is the title of his blog, Touch Em and Ya Get Em. Something so true for all of us! Be sure to read it...it's worth it!

Yep. If you didn't believe in the power of Social Media, you should now!

I have been looking at all of this for some time and just got brave enough to start. Thanks for the courage and motivation.

That IS a cool story, Thom.  I have trouble keeping up with everything and put a "stop" on taking anything else., so I guess I won't have any cool stories like this to report.

What a really cool story.  I am easing into more social media... it's driving my kids a little nuts, but I'm treading anyway.

I'm with you!  I was recommended a "new friend" on Facebook and yesterday attended a meeting where my "new friend" was also in the audience.  Wow -- I'm rather shy -- but went up after the meeting and said - Hello -- I'm one of your newest friends and stuck out my hand.  He smiled and was thrilled to meet me in person -- we had a nice conversation.  It eased us into a relationship that wouldn't have happened without social media!

These are all really cool stories.  I need to make some of my own.   Watch out now!

Thom, excellent story and confirmation of why I am and need to be here in AR and the other social medias.

I have a lot of catching up to do though. I'm still not using Facebook and Twitter like I should.

Thom.

This an amazing story and proof of the power of social media.  I am learning more about it online and trying to catch up but you my friend, you seem to have a very goodle handle on it.   Congrats and thank you for sharing this social media success story.

Donnie: It can be overwhelming....just take it a step at a time. I'm still way behind where I want to be...but I just keep working on it!

Margaret:  Yes...I've got to really get into time blocking to manage what and where I am spending my time. But I do know it's worth it...for me....I'm in an area crammed full of Gen X and Y people...so it's the thing to do. I look forward to my Tomato launch sometime soon!

Wes:  For you.....anything!

Tammy:  Social Media...It's Not Just For Kids Anymore!

Margaret (2): It's awesome isn't it?

Evelyn: I'll be looking for them.

Connie:  Better brush up...you know they will be tweeting in March here in ATL! I've got to get the application on my phone...maybe....if the cost as text messages then NOT!

Gerry:  Nothing like a good success story to make you feel warm all over! LOL!

thom - is that you?  you threw me for a loop with the pic change!  As for social media?  there is nothing like it to make those connections that you might not have otherwise made!  great story and testimonial!

Leesa: Just trying to kick things up!

Thom - Not only a great story, but a great look at a timeline of connections resulting in the meeting.  Its fun to connect the dots sometimes and see how you got from one point to the other.

Great story, loved the timeline Thom.  I am in Vegas now and hoping to meet alot of my online friends @ convention.  KM
