Have you heard about the Atlanta Beltline? It is 22 miles of light rail transit and 33 miles of multi-use trails connecting 45 neighborhoods around the City of Atlanta and is the largest urban redevelopment plan currently underway in the United States. Upon completion, the Beltline will redefine how people live, play and work around the city.
Some people have been skeptical about the plan. However, one segment of it opened this past weekend. The 2.4 mile West End Trail originates from Westview Drive south of I-20 and goes across Ralph David Abernathy and south along White Street to Brown Middle School at Peeples Street. It connects three parks, Westview Cemetery, Joseph Brown Middle School and the Kroger Village Shopping Center, while providing safe pedestrian and bicycle access under I-20 and through the West End and Westview neighborhoods.
Here are some pictures that I took yesterday of the upgraded Gordon White Park at the corner of Abernathy and White Streets.
For more information about the Beltline, visit www.beltline.org. You can also attend a Beltline 101 information session (see calendar)or an actual bus tour of the beltline. I attended the bus tour last Friday, and it was very informative and gave me a new appreciation of the beltline. The tour will cover the planned route of the light rail system so you see the actual neighborhoods that it will connect. It's quite impressive!
