Initially, the Town of Buford, GA was created as a lunch stop for the Atlanta Richmond Air-Line Railroad and was named after the then-president, Algernon Sidney Buford, who was actually a Virginian. The Town of Buford finally became the City of Buford in 1896. Buford quickly established itself as an educational, political, and industrial power house by the onset of the early 20th century, going so far as to be called the "New York of Gwinnett." Among it's other industries, Buford was internationally recognized for it's manufacture and sale of leather and leather products, becoming known as "Leather City." Bona Allen, Inc. helped this reputation through it's distribution of famous leather products nationally, especially to Hollywood.
