Lake Lanier is managed and protected by the Army Corps of Engineers. Under their management they operates campgrounds, swimming beaches, parks designed for picnicking, fishing and boating areas around the 37,000 acres and 692 miles of shoreline. The lake is also a source of water and power for the metropolitan Atlanta area. Buford Dam is located on the south side of the lake. The Lake was named after a musician and poet from Macon, Georgia. Sidney Clopton Lanier was born February 3, 1842 and died September 7, 1881. He was best known for his poem "The Song of The Chattahoochee".
