Small towns, art deco, and the whims of fashion ... and preserving the past!

Art Deco in Hogansville Georgia by Richard WeisserBack in the late 1920's, a new architectural fad was spreading like wildfire across the land. Art deco was the haute couture of builders seeking clean lines and a "modern" contemporary look.

And while the Empire State Building in New York City is one of the finest examples and the largest monument to the craze, the genre was not limited to big cities and high budgets. It endures today in small towns across America.

The photo is part of the old Rialto Theatre n Hogansville Georgia. Hogansville is a small town even today, a mill village that still depends on agriculture and textiles for survival.

But the old Rialto, now refurbished as City Hall, stands proud and tall on the well preserved main street through the historic downtown district.

So even though styles change, there are classics that endure forever, bolstered by those that seek to preserve an important part of our architectural history! Thanks to their efforts, the works of the past serve today as living museums.

And that's a good thing!

The pic is one of your best!

Mel...

Thanks ... I have been wanting to write a post using this pic, and finally thought ... why not do the obvious?

That is a very appealing architectural design. I like the way the building looks and you had great camera skills working here for you.

Richard - I enjoy the old art deco style buildings, the movie theaters especially. It is also one of my favorite decorating styles, behind Arts&Crafts and Mission (yes, they actually are different).

David...

The dark sky is one of my trademarks ... and is done at the time of the shot. Thanks for noticing and taking the time to comment.

Big Mike...

I love Arts and Crafts ... Mission is nice too ... a little more Californian to me!

Richard  I would never have guessed, but the building does have the grandeur of an old theatre. Good contrast between the building and the sky.

The craftsmanship in so many older buildings is astounding. I think they're gorgeous. Thanks for the picture.

The old buildings are nice; I wish they would preserve more of them instead of replacinf them with monstrosities.

I can't think of any building right off hand here that fit the style, but I'm sure their are some. It's always neat to see different parts of towns that pay homage to the architectural fads of their period.

We have a few buildings in our area but most of our buildings are quite traditional.

Richard:  We have to work on that last line.  Conjuring up images of the homemaker queen Martha Stewart.  As for the picture, another great one.  It's so modern looking I thought I first you might be dabbling in CGI.  Have a great weekend.

RW,

We have talked about this before and I very much agree.  We do need to preserve some of our history, it is fast fading.

Richard...I see some of the styles reflecting on our past designs.  That is not all bad!
