Grand Opening for Marietta Museum of History Aviation Wing

The Marietta Museum of History will host a grand opening of its Aviation Wing on Saturday, November 6th with the help of students from Kennesaw State University.

The event, which will take place at the Aviation Wing's park at the corner of Atlanta Road and South Cobb Drive, will be from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Adults are $3; students ages 11-17 are $2; and children under age 10 are free.

Activities will include tours of the eight aircraft on site, entertainment, food and activities for kids such as face painting, moon walking and paper airplane competitions.

As part of a business class project, the KSU students were assigned to create and implement a project to benefit a non-profit organization. The students chose to work with the Marietta Museum of History because it is a local, smaller nonprofit, and they knew their efforts would be more beneficial considering the organization's size. A grand opening of this scale would not have been possible without the students' efforts. In return, it was a priceless experience for the students, who learned the importance of marketing and networking with other community organizations.

The museum has been working to open its Aviation Wing since it received the lease on the property and the assets in February. Although the museum does not yet have a building for the Aviation Wing, it does have eight aircraft, provided by the Air Force, the Navy and Lockheed Martin, as well as several trailers, provided by Lockheed, that are housing exhibits. Several more aircraft have been promised to the museum, providing that it secures a building large enough to hold them.

Saturday's event is meant to get the word out to the community that an Aviation Wing is needed to highlight this segment of the city's history. Eagle Scouts from troops throughout the county have been donating their time and efforts to help construct an entrance to the park and work on the aircraft displays.
A capital campaign is planned to raise money for a building.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to spend some time learning about Marietta's history the vision that local leaders have for this project. It will be a beautiful day and fun and educational for the whole family.
