Airplanes in flight. A photographic study on another not so wordless weekday.

Jet Engines by Richard WeisserOne of my favorite photographic challenges is capturing airplanes in flight. There is just something awesome about attempting to freeze frame the huge metal giants speeding overhead at 160 knots.

In addition to the technical obstacles, you may also have to contend with airport security. Most areas around airports are now restricted and you may need a permit to get the shot you want.

Use a fast lens, and learn to "track" the airplane in flight. It takes a little practice, but you can learn to predict the line of flight and move the camera on the correct trajectory.

The resulting photos can be dramatic and are a welcome addition to any portfolio!

I to be on one of them going to some relaxing beach in the south of somewhere

These are incredible photographs.  I think it not only is the lens, but you certainly are talented.

Very cool pictures, Richard. I was just talking to Amy about brushing up on our photography skills. It looks like we have a way to go to get to the level of taking a moving airplane. Thanks for sharing.

Richard, I want to know... how those skies in Georgia are so blue all the time! You do some awesome work, and I am betting blue is your favorite color. Next to red that is, lol, after seeing your little red car. Great shots!

Eric...

That sounds great my friend!

Joan...

Thanks ... I love trains and planes! I'm not really a car guy. lol and thanks.

Dan...

It;s just something that I like to do a lot! Thanks for the kind words.

Richard,

These are incredible pictures..you photographic skills are far advance and much appreciated. Thank you for sharing.

Andrea...

Start with clear skies, the correct angle to the sun and good filtering. As you know, dark blue skies are one of my trademarks that goes way back to my film days! Thanks for noticing.

Sally...

It's always been one of my favorite things. Thanks for the comment.

Dorie...

WOW..Richard those are fantastic pictures.  Amazing ..looks like you were standing right under the plane at take off.

Richard - Great talking with you again earlier today!  Nice pictures, my friend.  When are you going to start selling coffee table books of your photos?

Chasing down fast moving objects does take special equipment and some patience. I guess I'll just look at your finished photos.

Richard, taking pictures of airplanes is just a challenging as fast moving cars at a racetrack. Good glass and good equipment is the call of the day...

I'm guessing you were actually a lot farther from this plane than it looks, because if you were that close the sound would be ear shattering.

Richard, those are cool shots.  I know what you mean though about the security now since 9/11, everybody always freaks out when you're just tring to get that unusal perspective shot.
