North Georgia Mountains, Leaf Watch 2010, Explore North Georgia, Autumn Leaves, The Lodge at Copperhead
It is my humble opinion to say anytime is a good time to be in the North Georgia Mountains but my favorite time of all is October and November because that means Autumn has arrived.
Autumn officially began September 22 and right on cue, the temps changed accordingly. Wonderfully milder days and cooler nights spell
R-E-L-I-E-F after a blistering summer. Soon, the Autumn leaves will be showing off their colorful splendor.
Whether you choose to hike, bike, drive or canoe through these ancient mountains, you will be surrounded by nature and experience some of the most beautiful scenery there is. Discover the rivers, lakes, creeks and waterfalls and at the end of the day, go back to a relaxing cabin and build yourself a cozy, warm fire. Oh, how I love this time of the year in the mountains.
Here are a few places in Fannin County to experience the best nature has to offer and get the most from your leaf watching exploration:
Turkey Farm Loop - gravel loop around an old turkey farm off Aska Road to Shady Falls Road.
Shallowford Bridge - old one lane bridge built in 1920 spanning the Toccoa River off of Aska Road near the Toccoa River Restaurant.
Old Dial Road and Toccoa River - cross Shallowford Bridge out to Sandy Bottoms Canoe Launch and
Campground.
Snake Nation - winds through a beautiful pastoral setting, so named by the Cherokee Indians prior to the Trail of Tears in the mid 1800s.
GA Highway 60 - one of the most scenic routes in the Georgia mountains leads you to Suches, Dahlonega, Morganton and Blue Ridge.
Old Skeenah Mill - built in 1848 by Willis Woody. He brought his family to the Skeenah Valley ("black bear" in Cherokee) in 1839. The water-powered Mill is listed on the National Register.
The Swinging Bridge - less than a mile from Old Skeenah Mill is a bumpy 3 mile dirt road that will take you to this 270 foot supsension bridge built by the U.S. Forest Service. You will have to hike about 5 minutes on the Benton MacKaye/Duncan Ridge National Recreation Trail to reach the bridge.
Drop by Fannin County's Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center located on Orvin Lane Drive near CVS off of Hwy. 515 at Ingles and pickup a map and more detailed information for self-guided tours. Call 1-800-899-MTNS. Also visit Cycle South and Blue Ridge Mountain Outfitters in downtown Blue Ridge for great advice and essentials.
