Unfortunately, Business Week reports an announced bloodbath, as predicited. According to Business Week "Countrywide, the nation's largest and recently most-embattled mortgage lender, announced it was laying off as many as 12,000 people today, roughly one-fifth of its 61,000-strong workforce. In a letter to employees company founder and ceo Angelo Mozilo called the current slump "the most severe in the contemporary history of our industry." He said home price appreciation had "stopped dead in its tracks," that there had been increased delinquencies in "far too many borrowers" and that the secondary market for jumbo loans and those that don't qualify for government-sponsored insurance "has become nearly illiquid." In a Countrywide internal letter, it is predicted that 2008 origination volume will decrease by 25% for 2008 versus 2007. It is another sad day in the industry with the loss of this many jobs, which further destabilizes the economy.

Michelle, I saw the news yesterday afternoon. Your post is very eloquent and well stated. My heart goes out to those people that lost their jobs.
We all need to remember that there is still opportunity in this market. Now, more than ever before, is the time to market, market, market. If you haven't been seen in your local community people might think that you've gone out of business.
Kate, thank you. The collateral damage of job loss is tremendous and sad. I am fortunate that our market has remained fairly stable at this time and agree now is the time to market to our fullest capabilities.
I too saw the lay off news yesterday. My neighbor is a loan officer for CW but I haven't heard a peep out of him.....who knows?
I'm so tired of layoff news. Those poor people and their families must be in turmoil. We've had layoffs hit hard in our area for the last 3-4 years with no end in sight. I wish them the best, and that they find new employment soon.
Michelle, Ouch!
I've been expecting to see this for a while. I'm glad they haven't had to go any further, like Chapter 11. The ride is going to get bumpier.
More bad news....1/2 of our clients use Countrywide....
Chris - I spoke to a group of 30 loan officers on Friday at their monthly luncheon about 25% of them were from Countrywide - I hope they are still employed this morning.
Kris - is is just sad, there are 12000 more people who are going to have difficulty paying their mortgages.
Joe - ouch is right!
Kathy - sorry to hear that!
