Fulton County Georgia Tax Notices Have Errors

A 2010 State law scheduled to go into effect January 1 of this year, requires the counties to send assessment notices to all property owners regardless of whether or not there was a change in the value of their property. The notices have to include estimated tax bills based on last year's mileage rates. Additionally, the new law was also to simplify the appeals process for homeowners, since many homes were over assessed due to the downturn in the real estate market.

Fulton county sent out the required notices, and the notices contain errors. Many property owners saw their estimated taxes go up between $2000 and $3000 dollars. They could not believe what they were reading. Some spent sleepless nights, in anticipation of going to the tax office the next day. People are in a state of disbelieve, knowing that the value of their property has decreased and their taxes have gone up substantially. According to reports the property owners in the city of Atlanta were hit the hardest.

The Fulton county appraiser's office has yet to pinpoint exactly where things went wrong. But assured the public they are working to correct it. However, they are taking into account what it will cost to send out corrected notices, thus the decision on how that will be handled is still pending.

The Fulton County Board of Assessors has scheduled a series of public meeting to help taxpayers to understand the notices and changes to the appeals process. Four meeting are scheduled in May and four in June.
