The Staging Chef

I've been given another opportunity to speak to a group of Realtors. This time I am addressing the difference between staging a vacant home and doing a staging/redesign of an occupied home. I have had a lot of fun putting my candid presentation together for them. I love doing both actually, vacants and redesign. One thing that came out of my preparation for the upcoming presentation is an analogy comparing the two that I want to share.

"Professionally staging a vacant home for sale, to me, is like a Chef that has exceptional skills and demonstrates the ability to select the correct utensils necessary along with the freshest ingredients and hand picked spices to create an exquisite meal that appeals to the majority of palettes."

"Professionally re-designing an occupied home for sale, is like a Chef that has exceptional skills and demonstrates the ability to work with inferior, but adequate utensils, average canned goods and the standard condiments at hand to create an exquisite meal that appeals to the majority of palettes."

Great analogy! Very effective! Thanks for sharing and I'm sure your meal...I mean PRESENTATION will be a hit!!!

Love the analogy Karen.  Now, could you come down here and do a couple of presentations for me? :-)  You are a creative genius Marine Corps mom!

This is super Karen. You always have great way of getting the point across to your reader. Very timely analogy... with the food and all ;) Is this a high cal Blog... or are we going with higher protein and reduced cal on this?

Karen!  Great way to get people to relate!

Karen - This looks great, I love using analogies!  After your presentation, could you write again and let us know how well it was received?

Hi Elaine!  Thx -- Maybe it should be both meal and presentation (Realtors always gather for food!)

Hey Terry -- I'd come do a presentation for you any time! You are in FLORIDA girl!  January through March would be my preferred months, of course! oh, and that's just around the corner, isn't it?  Hey, Marine and X are back together --- maybe I still have a shot at getting photos . . .

Hi Lori!  you're a hoot . . . now I am challenged . . .  hmmm, let's see, the staged vacant is pretty sweet; and the redesigned occupied has been striped of all the unnecessary ingredients.  Both burn a lot of calories to do chew, and both are very healthy for the seller's wallet.  And considering one's home is where the heart is . . . So I would say high priority , uh, high profitability (I mean high protein!)  Does that work? :-)

Hi Margaret Ann-- Thx so much. I always get excited when we come up with a new way to discuss staging!

Jackie -- you are a night owl, girl!  I will share -- I made a bunch of notes, but really will be talking from the hip this morning at the presentation, but I'll try and either put something together for a post or will e-mail you off line!

Cute comparison!  I bet they enjoyed your presentation!

I love the Chef display like he is truly working Magic.  Great analogy.  Be sure to tell us how well everyone received the presentation.

Tarenia

Karen, I love the analogy and the picture and would also love to hear how it's received.  I think it will be a hit!

Thank you Kristina!  Presentation went well I'll try an blog on it this weekend . . .

Hi Tarenia -- glad you liked it! Thx!

Hey there Carole!  went well; seems everyone relates to food, right? Thx for the kind words.

Karen - LOL!  Maybe if I focused on just one thing at a time for several hours I wouldn't have to stay up until the wee hours of the morning trying to get everything done!  I'm looking forward to the follow - up...I'm sure even you're 'from the hip' will be awesome.

Jackie

Karen,
You are such a good storyteller. Love this one! Please keep them coming.

Now you've done it Karen! You've reminded me that I was supposed to be cooking supper. Oh well! You always have so much fun stuff to share. Thanks for doing so!!!

Sounds delicious Karen!  Another great example of using creativity to explain how important home staging services are.  Nice one!

Hi Karen-

As a mom who always considered it a challenge to take leftovers and come up with a new & appealing dishfor the "whole family" -could that be compared to a chef with occupied home staging?  I find THAT more of a challenge than the "start from scratch" recipe-but, hey that's just me.  I will take staging anyway that I can get my hands on it-I am hungry for more!!

Good analogy.  I particularly liked the last sentence of both!!

Hey Jackie -- it's past my bedtime so here's good night to you!

Hi Anthea -- I don't think this business will ever run out of analogies!

girlfriend Yvonne! Tonight I served TWO (not just one), but TWO different kinds of Progresso canned soup to choose from!  and a choice of cracker, to boot!  Not to mention a beverage choice of milk, water, juice, coke, Dr, pepper, rootbeer, or martini's

Karen, Can you imagine my surprise when I learned that Hamburger Helper is not a sought after meal. I'll have to look up Rachel Ray.

( 12/14/07 08:21PM ) — Karen Dembsky, Atlanta Home Staging

Rachel Ray . . . let me guess, not a hamburger helper fan?  You know I really have never had hamberger helper.  I bought it though a few times for my kids when they were teenagers and they would fix it for friends coming over after games, etc.

But, I can only imagine what a great home staging redesigner could do with hamburger helper and a few other household items, right?

You have that right Karen! The hardest thing to work with when home staging may be TV dinners; right?

( 12/18/07 09:17PM ) — Karen Dembsky, Atlanta Home Staging

guess that depends on the tv show while enjoying that tasty TV dinner . . . LOL!

TV dinners tasted much better when then were packed in the aluminum divided trays - or did they make the TV reception better - I can't remember anymore?  Did that aluminum contribute to memory loss?

Love the food/chef analogy Barefoot Contessa Karen! People understand this type of "cooking" lesson better than reading it in a book. You make the visual come to life, which is so important to our clients. Bravo!
