Butler Plantation.....American History and a Wildlife Refuge

A former rice plantation, now in the care of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as wildlife preserve is the former site of Major Pierce Butler's rice plantation known as Butler Island Plantation.

The former plantation house is now a private residence owned by the Department of Natural Resources.

The surrounding area which was the rice plantation consisted of a system designed by Holland engineer using dikes and canals to grow rice. Similar rice systems are still in cultivation today but not at Butler Plantation. Butler Plantation is the the protection of the state of Georgia's Department of Natural Resources and is used as a wildlife management area.
