About five miles outside of Watkinsville, heading south along Ga Highway 15, you will see a sign on the right for Elder Mill Covered Bridge. Make a right turn onto Elder's Mill Rd and in about one mile you will come to the bridge. While you can stop on either side, there is a small parking area on the west end where your vehicle will be out of traffic, what very little that there is.
Elder's Mill covered bridge was originally built, in 1897, across Call's Creek, between Athens and Watkinsville. In 1924, it was no longer needed there so it was moved to it's current location spanning Rose Creek. The bridge is about 100 feet long and is one of the few left in Georgia, open to vehicle traffic, that has not been reinforced with steel beams.
You can follow one of the paths along Rose Creek to get different views of the bridge. Or, you can follow the path further along the creek, listening to the splashing of the water as it flows around the rocks and down the several small cascades. In the summer, the path is well shaded, helping you to remain cool from the heat in the open.
There is a small sign in the west side parking area that provides some information about the bridge.
Elder's Mill Covered Bridge is well cared for and supported by the community. The Watkinsville Garden Club has a small garden at the east end. During the Christmas season, the bridge is decorated with lights.
