Hollywood Filming Makes a Comeback to Kauai After a Brief Hiatus

Kauai has long been known for its appeal to movie makers. The backdrop for many a film in the past, the island saw a quiet spell after “Tropic Thunder” was produced here three years ago.

Things changed this spring when George Clooney arrived for the filming of “The Descendants.” Soon after crews wrapped up, Adam Sandler arrived to film “Just Go With It.” And, in June, the island welcomed Johnny Depp as he arrived with crews to film “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

“...constant marketing and staying in touch and establishing relationships with film executives throughout the years has helped to keep Kaua`i on Hollywood’s radar,” said Art Umezu, film commissioner in the county Office of Economic Development. And of course, all this has a positive effect on Kauai’s economy.

In a recent article in The Garden Island, assistant editor Paul Curtis wrote, “... the economic value to the island of filming is unmistakable. [Angela] Tillson estimates the cast and crews of the last two movies probably left in the neighborhood of $16 million and $17 million on this island alone.”

“They were (are) staying at local hotels, eating at local restaurants, drinking at local bars, renting vehicles, enjoying beaches and activities on their days off, and generally pumping up the economy right when it’s needed,” Tillson said. Ms. Tillson owns A Whale of a Time Productions.
