Improving the Outdoor Appeal of your Hawaii Kai Home

We are lucky in Hawaii Kai and all the Islands to have the weather to enjoy outdoor living all year. If you would like to make some minor improvements to your home to add to the value, but aren't sure which will bring the greatest return, consider outside remodeling.

One reason exterior improvements can bring value is their curb appeal. They also will give you more enjoyment of your home while you wait to sell in the coming years. The National Assn of Realtors (NAR) recently reported that a wood deck produces the 2nd highest return in home improvement projects, of any investment, including additions and remodels.

Here are some ideas to help you re-energize and remake your outdoor spaces.

1. Gazebo - these can be made of plastic (think of the termite frustration), be freestanding or attached to a garden wall. They give shade and a relaxation spot.

2. Planters and window boxes - these are decorative, functional, can be moved, and can be replanted frequently (for instance, if you use them for vegetables).

3. Picnic table - these look nice on a lanai, deck, or lawn, and double as eating area and gathering place.

4. Trellis - these can be a sun screen for our tropical sun and a place to hang outdoor plants. Again, they can be made out of plastic as well as wood.

5. Trash can corral - hide your trash can and recycle containers, and greatly improve the aesthetic appeal of the outside of your home as well.

Think outside when you decide to improve your home. Not all remodeling has to be interior. Contact me for more ideas and to compare the values of your real estate with those of your neighbors in any Hawaii Kai community.
