Plumeria flowers from Kihei Maui Hawaii - wake up and smell the flowers

I remember when I grew up in Hawaii!  There are lots of beautiful flowers!

Dan - you're very fortunate to have grown up in the islands.  I hope you can make it back for a visit one day, with your wife.

Georgina - the Plumeria photos do not come up. I have grown them before and they are among the most beautiful of flowers!

I love plumeria flowers! They are so pretty and they smell so good. I especially like plumeria scented lotion.

I wish I could replant them in Idaho they are beautiful!

Plumeria is one of my favorite fragrences I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to wake up every morning to the scent of those flowers.

Gorgeous flowers here in the cold we can't grow such tropical beauties as these.

Julie - maybe you could grow one in a bucket of sand indoors - they don't care for much mud.

Steve - they don't grow very well at our place, we have just 1.... not sandy enough.

Are they hard to grow? I tend to kill plants. My sister has great success with orchids. Maybe she should be the one to try it first.

Julie - They are pretty easy, if you have lots of sun, not too much wind, and a light sandy soil.  Just break off a branch, and stick it in the ground.  It's that easy.

I have some Plumerias growing, they really do pretty well here...I got them in Hawaii.

Cindy - I see those little packages that they sell to take home... I"m glad one worked for you.  Is it indoors?

I wish I had seen the packages of Plumerias when I was in Hawaii. I will look for them next time. They are so pretty.

I love the smell of plumeria.  The grandfather of one of the girls I work with was born and raised in Maui.  Her grandfather developed and raised plumeria and named them after the girls, Cynthia, Kimberly and Jean Moragne. 

Julie - Julie, look for them in Longs or Hilo Hatties, maybe even ABC stores.

I have had a few friends try to grow them on the mainland with mixed success. The california folks didn't get many flowers. My Colorado friend got his to flower nicely in his solarium, but it didn't grow very well. Seems like a more tropical climate is better. Interesting that yours don't grow as well Hunter. I know places in Haiku that I would think would be similar climate wise where they grow pretty well.

Pete - I think it's the soil - they probably prefer a sandy soil.  Ours is more thick and hold the moisture.

I have a plumeria that a seller gave when I listed his house.  We bring it in during the winter months an it looses it leaves.  Spring and summer it has lots of leaves, but it has never bloomed.  We have hot and humid summers, here in Tulsa, so I'm not sure what I can do to get flowers. I love th smell when I arrive in the Islands.  My grandmother was born in Kona and I have a special love for Hawaii.

Cindy - some of the varieties here lose their leaves in the winter too.  Have you tried a little More Bloom plant food?  It stimulates flowering.  Kona smells delicious with all those flowers.

Does anyone have any plumeria cutting that they can share?  I finally move into my own home and would love to plant some but I am very short on money.  Plumeria is one of my favorite flowers...I just love the smell of it.  If anyone have any and would be willing to share, I will be more than happy to pay for the shipping.  I currently reside in utah.  If you can share some cutting, please e-mail me at tran.1life2live@gmail.com
