As of today, my town of Paia on the North Shore of Maui is the first to go Plastic Bag Free in Hawaii. As a popular water sports town, many local residents have seen first hand the adverse effects of plastic bags on sea life. All too often you see sea birds, turtles, fish or reef entangled in discarded plastic bags. A local group called No Mo Plastic Bag has been working with local merchants over the last six months to raise funds for biodegradable bags and reusable tote bags. As of today, the biodegradable bags are available throughout the town. A benefit will be held tomorrow evening to help defray any extra cost associated with the new bags. I just thought this was a good story about a green minded community stepping up to take action to preserve the local environment.
