Military in Hawaii: What is it like to serve in Hawaii?

By: David Kucic, Hawaii Real Estate Agent, Military Retired

What could possibly be better than to be stationed in Hawaii? Millions of people spend thousands of dollars per family to be able to travel here for only a week or two during the year and you are lucky enough to be able to live here for a few years. Before I retired from Schofield Barracks, I heard complaints from my Soldiers and their family members about "living on the rock" but I just never did buy it. If you are stationed here for a normal military tour of 2-4 years, there is plenty to keep you busy during that time and there shouldn't be time for complaining.

Tonya is Hawaiian, born in Honolulu with family on Oahu and the Big Island of Hawaii. Most of her family has lived here all of their lives and some of them still have not seen everything on the island yet! We recently took Tonya's Auntie and Uncle on a hike to the top of Diamond Head (free). That was their first trip to the top in the almost 50 years they have been living here! The hike is not too demanding and any member of the Military should be able to handle it with no problem. Hiking trails are located all over all of the islands.

On the other hand, if you are a deadbeat, don't leave your house, barracks, dorm or quarters, then you are just going to be miserable no matter where in the world you go.

In addition to the activities on the island of Oahu, you also have the islands of Maui, Kauai, Hawaii (the Big Island), Lanai, Kahoolawe, and Niihau. Maui, Kauai, Hawaii and Oahu are the top tourist destinations and Lanai also has a few places to see and visit. Each island is beautiful in its own way from lush green landscapes to lava flows to barren countryside to beautiful beaches to snow skiing if you so choose.

The biggest bonuses to Military Families living in Hawaii is the multitude of services such as commissaries, PX's, BX's, NEX, medical facilities and recreational activities on the military installations. Take a look at the list below to find all of the facilities.

Enjoy your tour of duty and arrive in the Aloha State with the goal of getting out of your home and seeing this wonderful state.
