Hawaii government offices are closed today for Statehood Day which this year commemorates of the anniversary of 50 years of statehood for the 50th state. Back then, Hawaii residents voted overwhelmingly for statehood which was then approved by congress and signed by President Eisenhower 50 years ago today. A recent poll shows the vast majority of Hawaii citizens till approve of statehood. Not all approve however and there were a few hundred protesters on hand for the event. In deference to those opposed, the event is called a commemoration and not a celebration.
