From January 1983 to present, the Kilauea Volcano has been going through an eruptive era. A new "episode" of this volcanoe's eruption is going on and this warrants a very careful watch. The events starting from Father's Day (June 17, 2007) and are almost identical to the events that led up to the January 1997 eruptions at the Napau Crater.
These are the following events since the activity started.
I haven't been to the Big Island of Hawaii since 1972 or so. My family specifially flew over there from Oahu to view the eruptions that were fierce. There was some kind of makeshift platform and we could only go so far to look. I can remember feeling heat on my face with the glowing spewing lava jumping into the air from the depths of the earth below.
On May 23, 2007 I posted Blogging about "VOG" in Hawaii which was about the air pollution the activity of the volcanoes on the Big Island causes. If the winds are blowing toward Oahu then we get it pretty thick.
Not three weeks after this picture (below left) the activity began. Picture on the right was taken on May 30..so you can see the difference after the winds blew away the vog.

There are also specific ares that are closes so be aware that there are rules/closed areas in Hawaii Volcano National Park. (picture courtesy of National Park Service)

Sally, That is scary. What is the geologists' prediction for the near future?
Can you still take heli rides over the lava flow?
Sally what type of evacuation system is in order for such an event. This sounds really scary, but I am fascinated by the whole thing as well.
Mana: Volcanic action has been going on for many many years..they use GPS to track the movement so we'll be kept up to date. Diamond Head on Oahu has been extinct for many years as the case of many...that's how our islands formed 100%.
John: They sure do...personally I don't think I would....
Penny: I'll be doing a whole follow up on this although I am unsure of evacuation system as we live on another island...will check it out. (waiting for pictures to come back from the big island....friend went yesterday)
Beautiful photos! Glad I peaked at this post even though I don't currently (emphasize currently) have clients heading to Hawaii. Where were you when I did? Oh, that's right, it was BAR, as in "before ActiveRain"
Margaret: That's cute....BAR ....I'll have current pics in a day or so and will be doing up a follow up on superstitions and current volcanic activity. (may not seem interesting ...but wait until the pictures and next story come out)
Sally.I'm glad you wrote this. I was going to email you and ask about it since it's ben on the news!
Sis - Volcanic eruptions amaze me. Beautiful, powerful, & deadly. Surreal combination.
Joan: I thought I'd have more pics...my friend didn't go there.
Jason: Hey lil bro....I think I'll stay on this island...when the earthquake hit that island it knocked out power on all islands. (?????) I didn't have a pc for 16 hours!
Sally, that has to be scary for the residents that live closest to it. As you know from my MeMe Post my family was able to come to the US, because of a Volcano that erupted on the Island that my Dad was born on in the Azores. I got to see the damage that it caused, but I am sure glad that I did not experience it first hand.
George: In 2002 it went right over a subdivision. Added picture above. See the stop sign on the right top?
Those are such cool pictures!! West Virginia never shows off like that! ;o)
Hi Little Girl! Are you almost home? You have some beautiful views there!
Sally,
I'm sure this must be scary, but those photos are amazing! :)
I'm home!! Just got my girls back from Tennessee today, they were with my Mom and step Dad for almost a week. I missed them so much!! Life as usual now, but I'm glad.
Hi Sally, Oh I remember the "VOG" from when this started in 83. I also remember when the lava overtook the Queens Bath. Its all so amazing, exciting, scary and sad at the same time. I'll be looking forward to the pictures when your friend gets back.
Suzanne: There's some unreal ones on the internet too.
Sarah: Oh, good. Life back with Sarah here.
Lysa: She came back today and said she couldn't get close enough for good ones...shucks.
Sally,
I am a thrill seeker, so I would love to see up front a volcano. I think it would be one of those wonders of the world to see. Thanks for the info and pics.
Chuck: Are you now....I watched a guy on tv go inside on the rim to take video.....forget where but most likely on Nat'l Geo ...nope...not a thrill seeker....my daughter went paragliding a month or so ago....i tripped out.
We love the big island! Tonyas family is originally from Hilo. One of the most amazing things about the island is the contrast of colors from the black lava rock to the green grass to the blue ocean. It is just something that pictures or words cant describe. I am going there for CRS class at the end of the month and am taking the family along. We will spend several extra days there and will probably venture back to the volcanoes too. Good job on this post Sally!
Dave: I think it goes from green to dirt to lava to ocean. Can you take some pics so I can add on? Karen went but didn't get any...bummer.
Hey Sally. I've been to Volcanos National Park a few times. It's beautiful... from a distance!
Sally,
Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't been keeping up on the current status of the volcano. My most vivid memory of the lava flow was flying over the school bus that was buried to it's roof!
Unbelievable force of nature!
Lucky :)
Thank you sharing. It brings back memories. I was watching the lava movement there in 1978. It was pretty amazing to see the smoking earth right before your eyes. Amazing nature. When I lived in Germany, my parents would take us all over Europe. We drove to Sicily one year. My parents wanted to drive up to Mt Etna. I remember how scared I was. I was about 5 years old and to this day remember it so vividly. We were almost at the top of the volcano. I asked my parents what happens if it 'blows up'. They said, 'Oh, it won't do that honey, they have scientists up there and they will know and then warn everyone and come down.". Well, almost to the top and the volcano erupts right then and there, no warning! Many of the scientists up there were killed and my father sped down scary curvy tiny roads all the way back down that mountain to get away. I looked in the back window and could see the red filled sky, fire blowing out everywhere. Well, we were safe. But I tell you, I never again believed that 'they will know' thing! Katerina
Hi Sally, can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve in the next post. :) This was amazing. It would really be something to see this happen in person. Quite an amazing sight...although possibly scary. To know that this huge volcano has so much power and there is nothing we can do about it.
Pete: Yeah...I agree Pete!
Lucky: Ah....amazing isn't it. I watched a show on the public channel here and the guy filmed his own house getting rolled over by the lava. Million dollar home.
Katerina: And it sure is.
Stephanie: Same as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes...
Sally - I love learning - and volcanoes are big here - although none have spewed lately - Newberry National Monument (AKA Paulina) is in my back yard... there are two lakes up there - East Lake and Paulina when you are in the middle of East Lake there are sulfer bubbles that are always raising kind of scary - they say it will not blow in our lifetime... but I think they said that about Mt. St. Hellens too
That's so true. We can't do a thing about Mother Nature. :)
Thesa: Yeah...that Mt. St. Helen's thing was spooky....all these major things happening...katrina...the tsunami, the earthquake here, the volcanoes....what next?
Steph: and that's the way it is.
Sure Sally.....I will take several while we are there. Maybe I will take some time to post them on Localism????
Oh, that'll be cool. And just save me a couple for a follow up story okay?
No problem. I will make sure they are good, useable ones for you. Anything in particular that you would like for me to capture?
Sally, I can't get enough of Hawaiian pictures. When I was there I was at Oaho, and Maui. I loved Maui and some of its English county charm. I loved Oaho for the big city lights. My next Hawaiian trip I would love to see the Big Island, and cover every inch. Next it would be off to get Dogg, Randy, and of course your autograph....
David: Nice views, volcano stuff....
Diane: Funny! Just visit ...we'll show you aloha!
