A Haiku & The Big Jumping Rock at Waimea Bay- North Shore of Oahu

Blue ocean and skies

So inviting that's true

But leap off the rock?

--A Haiku by Sally

During the winter months at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, there can be winter surf swells up to 30 feet and during the summer it is most likely to be calm and serene (as in the picture above) and great for swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling while looking at all the diversity in these waters!

The "Big Rock" at Waimea Bay has a bunch of people on the top of it who climbed from oceans edge. Yes....I have had the pleasure as a teenager (hmmm...about 35 years ago lol!) to do the same. Leap, dive and as a young kid thinking I was invincible. Would I leap off it today? I think not.

Waimea Bay is one of the locations for the television series "LOST" and it is also the location for THE QUIKSILVER BIG WAVE INVITATIONAL IN MEMORY OF EDDIE AIKAU and who I wrote about in The Voyages of the Hawaiian "Hōkūle'a": A Tribute to Eddie Akau (tells his about his tragedy) The last surfing contest ended on February 29, 2008.

How about you? Would you jump? Leap? Dive?

Sally -these are absolutely gorgeous photos. Happy International Woman's Day!

Looks gorgeous, but I'll watch all the fun.

Hi Sally,

Those photos are breath taking. Maybe when I was younger I would give it a try, but my heart race's just at the thought! LOL! :)

Sally,

This looks like the most beautiful beach to hang out on in the summer.  It must be wonderful to have the memories of jumping off the rock when you were a teenager and of enjoying the time you spent there with your friends.

I was still diving off cliffs here in Ontario 8 years ago....hmmm, not sure if I would today or not.
I think I would!

Lovely photos....nice to look at while we just finish up another major snowstorm here in Ontario.

Jo

Faina: I had no idea...women's day ...thanks!

Missy: I think maybe it's an age thing :)

Suzanne: Hey there!  Hope you're doing better....just to let you know....I went to doctor and have to cut out my sweets....big time :)

Jo:  Well, hopefully this will bring a little sunshine in heart ...knowing one day you'll come with fellow Canadians during winter months :) :)

I'll pop on later on...gotta meet clients for home inspection!  Enjoy!

Sally... you always do a great job with your localism posts.  And I love the pictures...  they look so refreshing and relaxing...

Hi Sally,

NOPE, I have too much reverence for life (besides being a chicken).  I would watch though--unless it was one of my kids or grandchildren.  Great pictures.

That's really a beautiful spot WooHoo. yYs I would jump. I used to jump off bridges in my younger days. I LOVED it!!! Now I have to use the hand railing to get in the pool. But I would jump.......at least in my head:)

Sally, that's a gorgeous shot!  I might spit off it, but that's the extent of my daring anymore.  I'm not even sure I'd climb it.  (Life's short; let's not make it any shorter!)

Sally--You poet, you! How cute! Beautiful photos...Could be a travel brochure! Love that blue ocean!

Sally I am looking at the beautiful photos on your blog (the usual, aaahhh!) and out my window at the cold, driving rain.  Thanks for letting me escape to the beauty of your local paradise, if only in my mind.

Sally Aloha  i used to live in millilani back when i was in the army lived down in the valley, had some friends who lived over at the North Shore used to go there for cookouts. I do miss the scenery there, maybe ill go back to visit sometime. Thanks for the great pic.---Bart

Sally - Of COURSE I would jump!! NOT! It looks way too shallow for me...I don't need anymore brain damage. LOL

What a gorgeous place though. People actually jump from there?? Looks very dangerous.

Have a great weekend!

Sally, you are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place.  I hope I get there before I die!!

Aloha Sally,

Absolutely beautiful! Questions, how high is the rock, meaning how far would you need to jump and how deep is the water? I think I'd love the exileration of jumping, but once would be enough for me.

You know wnen fellow Rainer Marlene and I were there last month this didn't even occur to me. So how's the climp up the rock?

Jeff: Thanks! I love doing localism posts on the area stuff going on....and besides...a couple of beautiful pics to show off too :)

Leslie: Yeah...I think at my age we like to live life...finally..haha.

Bryant: I think that's why I shared that I have jumped....just not at my age now...lol

Sharon: Me too....no more gambling with life :)

Teri:  Thanks...if it brings a little joy to some...I'm happy.

Sharon: Ah....a beautiful retreat for you...in mind :)

Bart:  My mom still lives in Mililani...and you must be talking about Launani Valley?

Linda: You're so honest....I would have said the same but.....hahaha

Audrey: Thanks so much!

Lynda: Not sure of measurements but I remember a long way down...and the climb up isn't too bad....if you're agile :)

Sally, This is stunning.  I am hoping to take my wife to Hawaii for the first time next year.

Love the cliff diving photo!

Sally, Those pictures....make me wish I were there!  You're right, I was SO much more adventurous then I am now, I wouldn't be jumping anymore either :)

Steve: Oh...that is a treat for you and your wife...give me a buzz!

Neal:  Oh, yeah...don't know about cliff diving..would you?

Carole: No kidding...that's okay...we'll live with the memories....:)

Sally that water looks sooooooo good.

I am with you Sally, you could not get me on top of that rock, much less jump off of it :) :)

Sally - we saw many of those wonderful vistas when we drove around the island. Since I'm no longer 20 and no longer invincible, no I wouldn't leap off today.

Great photo and poem! I'd go up an sit and marvel and walk back down :>)

I would if I was sure there wasn't a rock on the bottom when I hit the water...and not too high a cliff. I used to drive on large boards but that made my head feel like it cracked.

George: Looks so inviting doesn't it?  Not enough to make us jump though lol!

Me too Sharon...me too....:)

Joeann: At least you'd do that much....I don't think I'd go up...I'm not so keen on heights these days :)

Neal:  You're funny....I added on a you tube of some kids who jumped off....watch!

Sally~ That is amazing and no way would I be willing to jump off the big rock. That would be fun to watch other's do it though. Have a beautiful Sunday my friend!

Julie: You too Julie...you have a wonderful Sunday too! And....I just have too many ailments and wouldn't make it up anyway...lol!

Sally - spectacular photos. I might jump off - depends though - its been a while since I have done anything like that. There is a place with a high diving spot at Lake Havasu in Arizona that I used to "jump" - not dive off . . . even that hurt though!

Sharon: You must be still be young :)  I would break something getting up...let alone down lol!
